Indexing Options - Exclude - Data, Start Menu...etc.

I made some changes to my Indexing Options and noticed that on my C: drive, exclusions include data; start menu; AppData; Public Desktop; System32; Temp; and another them folder named "TempF 23423423-423423234-2xx-xxx-xxx, etc-Signatures (I think a Firefox file?)

It seems to me that including the Desktop and Start Menu would be a good idea to include in Windows Explorer search, yet I can't figure out how to exclude them from the exclusions! Meanwhile, I did rebuild the Indexing file.

    Comments? Suggestions?

    TIA

    Hi Dr Carl

If your main OS drive is the SSD and no data is stored on it apart from Windows and main applications, as I note your data is on separate drives exactly as I have, I turn off indexing on the OS C: drive as no personal data files to search really, so on no use IMHO, I do have it on for my data drives.

As for the Desktop/Start Menu and others, even if your C: drive is unticked click the small > and the tree will open, you will notice quite a few options ticked, navigate to USERS > Your User Name > and options are there, think offhand Start Menu is a default you cannot change and a good option to have but Desktop not really as would just search what you can see any-ways, other locations maybe but as I mention C: Drive for you likely holds nothing apart from OS.

    Hope this sort of helps

    Hi David,

Well, it sort of helps, but....yes, my OS drive is the C: - SSD, and even if I am pretty clean about not storing data on it, sometimes there can be, oh, let's say a photo...or a program! Programs are on there and sometimes I use search to find a program. Seems to me that it'd be OK for EVERYTHING to be searchable, that's why I am trying to exclude them from being excluded. (Like, so what if it takes a few seconds...?)

Same for desktop. The computer can search my 100 or so icons much faster than I can sou I'd like to include desktop as well.

I can't even find Start Menu anywhere...I opened SO many trees.... under USERS>MyName>

I just wish I could make search search everywhere. The software "Everywhere" does it, yet does not search contents.

I am so jaded, er, fortunate....

    Thanks

Did you open Control Panel > Indexing Options > Modify?

Yes, I opened Control Panel > Indexing Options > Modify...and show all locations, and the advanced button, and opened all ">" to see sub directories....can't find Start Menu anywhere.

I guess it's not that important. I had the dream that someone might know right off where it is....

    Regardless, thanks for your consideration

You need to expand C drive.
    Start menu.jpg
Here are the locations for the 2 Start Menus.
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
    C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
