I have a cookie that I can't get rid of. Anyone else ever have a problem with indextools.com? I have run all the programs the only one that finds it and marks it for deletion is AdAware SE but on reboot its back. CCleaner lists it in the section where you can select what cookies to delete or keep but when I run the scan it does not show up on the list. Spybot does not see it and AVG does not alert on it either. I have tried to manually delete it but nothing seems to happen.

    Thanks

Cookies are not problems! Please read step 11 of this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

Don't waste your time on it! In addition that site is a valid site and you are probably accessing it or something that you are running is accessing it.

Yes I am aware that cookies are harmless, I am just irratated that I can't get rid of it when I get rid of the other cookies. Never seen a cookie that would not delete.

It probably does delete! Close all browsers and do not open any until later when mentioned! Delete it with Ad-Aware and then double check to make sure it is gone. Don't trust Ad-Aware!!! Look for yourself to see if the cookie really exists!. And then do not open up any browsers after a reboot. Did it come back? If not, open up your brower and see if it now has come back.

    There

Ok, I have done this several ways starting with how you asked me to try. I ran AdAware and let it delete the file then I went to windows explorer and checked for the file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\cookie:administrator@indextools.com/ and find it still there.

Did a reboot anyway and checked again and the file is still there. Tried to manually delete the file ffrom the windows explorer and nothing, it just sits there. Tried deleting other cookies manually and they disappeared from the list as normal.

Went to safe mode with the Windows interface and tried the same procedures, (AdAware/Reboot, etc) and it still exists. Then tried to go to safe mode command prompt list the contents of the directory. Nothing would show up while searching that way yet upon reboot there it was.

During all this I did not bring up internet explorer, I guess it is time to give up trying.

You may have file corruption. Have you run chkdsk or a disk error-check?

How exactly did you try to access the folder from the command prompt?
Are you sure you were in the correct folder?

Did you look for Cookies for the Administrator here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies

    Not here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

You will not see the files in the TIF folder. They are in the hidden subfolders. Use the below program to navigate to the TIF folder and you will see a Content.IE5 folder and under it you may see many subfolders. The cookie will be in one or many of those subfolders.

    ExplorerXP

As suggested I ran the error check on the HD and found nothing, but installing the ExplorerXP program showed that there was no Indextools.com cookie in either of the two above directories. Yet Windows Explorer and AdAware still show it in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. I could not find a search function within ExplorerXP so I did not search with it to see if it was hidden anywhere.
I have a WD SATA drive and have noticed some programs give me initial errors on start but run fine otherwise, I believe you are correct that it is a file corruption that is just not showing up.

Also as to how I accessed C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files from the safe mode command prompt, when it came up it was already in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ and I just typed in CD\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files and I was in that dir. When I did a Dir to list the contents nothing showed up except the same directory structure as listed using ExplorerXP, Windows Explorer shows 247 files.

Based on the ExplorerXP results I am not going to worry about this blip any longer.

    See this:

Searching for Hidden Files on WinXP

I would only putindextools into the search since that should find anything that contains indextools.

With ExplorerXP you would have to look into the subfolders under Temporary Internet Files to locate the file. It will not be in the TIF main folder. There should be a Content.IE5 folder with a bunch of jibberish looking folder names under this folder.

Sorry must not have been clear, I can find the file with the Windows Explorer but not the file manager you had me use (ExplorerXP)

Then it does not exist because ExplorerXP shows everything. Even things that Windows Explorer will hide from you are shown in ExplorerXP.
