inf?

most copies floating around of the movie Pirate Radio (UK title: The Boat that Rocked) are named "inf-tbtr.mkv". i get the tbtr, but what's inf?!

obviously nothing to do with inf FILES. and the producer/studio/stars don't happen to have that for INITIALS or anything, afaict (cf if it had said mgm- or ilm-).

i went thru various acronym finders; nothing clicks. any guesses?

 

It could refer to the group that supplied that particular rip.

i'm guessing it's as just playin has it, altho it's got me wondering whether there is some DISTRIBUTOR or sumpin called "infinity (disks)".

 

i said nothing about illegal anything, nor about warez.

and it's obviously NOT an "information" file because it's an MKV file. i already said that.

wasn't there a series/distributor called "infinity collection"? that's perhaps a possibility. tho i still think jus playin' was prolly right the first time.

isn't MKV a FILETYPE? how is that inherently "illegitimate" as compared to AVI, MPG, etc?

maybe it is, i dunno. pls explain; i don't understand this. i thought it was just one of many filetypes. i've seen lots of stuff with this in the past and rarely had a problem with any of them. in fact, they've generally played better than AVI or JPG, iirc.

 

Sure it is just a filetype, but the reality is that nobody distributes in that format unless they are high definition rips and rips by definition are not legit. I know you downloaded it because you are curious about the filename. If you created it yourself, then it WOULD be legit, but then you wouldn't be asking about the filename

are you saying that AVI, JPG, MP4 etc are used as originals, but MKV is only used by pirates?

Im saying that MKV is often used for HD rips and that I have never seen an MKV from a source that offered it free (as in, not a rip), or even as paid.

Just like you won't find a company who sells their applications compressing them into a rar file. It can happen, but you don't see it very often, if at all.

INF could be Industry Neutral File since the MKV could be a mash-up of differing video formats to ensure that it is playable. It could also be short for Infinity as in Infinity Broadcasting Corp: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinity_Broadcasting_Corporation
