I followed the intro instructions to begin cleaning. In safe mode started CCleaner. It began process and then seized. Could not do anything with system. Had to power down. Reset and system came to a blue screen about fixing drives. Checked and then seized.

Try to restart WindowsXP home ed. It begins process and then returns to the blue chkdisk. Gets to verifying index and correcting errors and then seizes. Makes beeping noise
any ideas? Prior to doing this I could log onto windows fine just needing to remove trojan, dialer and adware.

    thanks

Exactly which features of CCleaner did you run?

CCleaner should not cause any problems like this. However doing a power down with a cleaning in process could impact any open files including the registry.

Do you have a Windows XP Home boot CD? You may have to do a repair. Which is a topic normally better discussed in the Software Forum.

Thanks for your reply. Enough data was lost to prevent hard drive to boot windows. It corrupted the disk an sectors. Spin rite could not even repair. I suspect it caused hard drive damage somehow. Whatever is is/was had probably gotten well into at least five registeries. Not sure what the Cleanup did. I followed the intro instructions at the heading of thread. Software and malware couldn't locate it. I could not wait any longer so I installed a new hard drive and transferred over what programs I could salvage. At least I can minimally function now. Very nasty malware with dialer, pop ups, email controls etc. Prevented windows from upgrading to SP2. I thought I had installed SP2 but only had a couple components and whatever it was got through. It could override firewall and virus scan.

    thanks

When you ran CCleaner, did you use the Issues feature of Ccleaner? It scans and reports registry issues and allows them to be fixed?

Nothing CCleaner would do could cause physical hard disk damage. However, shutting down with files open (especially the registry) could cause data loss and corrupt something.

As I may have mentioned, I was in safe mode when using cleanup. The program seized. Nothing would undo. Absolutely locked up. Resest, while maybe not the best option, but only one at the time perhaps corupted. I do not know. I do know that restarting brought to a desk check and further seizing. Used spin rite in an attempt to repair and while it is great, it could not get very far. I am trying piece by piece to pull data off the old drive a I have slaved it. Lost alot and saved some.

That was not my question. I was asking which aspects/features of CCleaner were you running.

As for what mode in Cleanup. Sorry, I do not recall. Much has transpired since then.

So you cannot remember whether you attempted to use the Issues feature at all?
    This could be important info.

I do not recall specifically. I followed the prepared thread first though.

It may be helpful to others though, BanmanPro and Tibs Dialer were two installations found.

Thanks for the info but they should not cause any major problems like this. Sounds like you had run something to scan for malware before running CCleaner since the PC crashed when CCleaner was run. What tools were run first, is there still any kind of log around from it?

I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience from trying to run the READ ME. It has been run many thousands of time and we have never had a problem like this. CCleaner has periodically refused to run but never has it crashed a system especially at the physical layer level. We have experience a few problems when people used the Issues feature of Ccleaner and then just ignored the content and had CCleaner fix all reported issues. This is bad thing to do with any program that is reporting "possibly" issues in the registry as you could remove things necessary for the PC to operate. However even doing something like this, the worse that could happen would be to have troubles booting. It would not cause physical disk damage.
