    Hi,

    I'm new to the forums. I have recently been infected by wuaucldt.exe malware, and cannot remove it. I recently reinstalled windows XP, and have slowly been reinstalling all my software.

    I had AVG antivirus installed for a couple of weeks without problem. Since yesterday (5th August) it shows an "AVG License Error" at startup. When trying to repair remove or reinstall, it always locks up. During the recommended scans, I could not fully close AVG, but stops all the processes I could.

    We also cannot access facebook.com through her IE browser. However, it is accessible through Chrome. I have also found the above file in task manager, registry, and deleted all references, but it keeps coming back.

    I have also had Word stop loading by itself (software, without opening a file). It will open a file however. The shortcut icon for word also disappeared. This has all been fixed by an Office repair. I also had a driver become corrupted, but this has been repaired. Other random errors also sometimes occur (I don't remember them at present).

    I have run all the tests that your website suggests, but it keeps coming back. Please can you suggest what I can do?

    Thanks

    Where was avg reporting this threat? Can you give the file path?

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SET282.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SET3B.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SET61.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SET87.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SETAD.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SETD3.tmp

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    SystemLook

    Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      ctfmon.exe
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
    Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this. Also attach the log from SystemLook. Answer my question about where avg is finding the threat! :)

    Thanks for the reply. Please find attached the log files as requested.

    I do not remember where AVG found the threat. Now, AVG will not let me enter the program (asks for new license, or closes). I cannot repair this. I did a search for AVG's log files, but could not find any. AVG has 4 processes running, and I can close 3 of them but not the 4th.

    This morning when I turned on the PC, all my windows updates had been removed, and I was asked to download them again (I haven't done it yet). Also, I normally hide file extensions, but these are now showing again on all my files.

    Before we continue, you need to put this machine back into NORMAL start up mode by using MSCONFIG.

    It's looking like you may have to uninstall avg > use the removal tool > and re-install. But let's finish here first.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FCopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ctfmon.exe | c:\windows\System32\ctfmon.exe

    DirLook::
    c:\windows\StartHtmico

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
