I have serious problem with my system. My son was looking at free gameing sites when AVG alerted him to serveral Trojan alerts in a short space of time. The consequence of which is that I can generally only start it in safe mode now, sometimes it will boot up in normal mode but no desk top icons or start bar will appear. I can access this via ctrl alt delete but generally the whole system freezes if I try and do too much. I also get the error message '/islist,:528:644,c:\program' failed to load (or words to that effect). I cannot connect to the internet in either safe mode or otherwise. Internet explorer loads but anything i search for just says 'page cannot be displayed'. I tried using the majorgeeks guide to cleaning the system and downloaded the recommended software onto a memory stick on another computer, but because I cannot connect to the internet, not all of the recommended downloads will work as they need internet access to load up. I am at a loss now!! Can anyone help??
    Thank you

You can run both ComboFix and the MGTools.exe in safe mode. We need to see what is happening in your system.

    HI,
I tried to run mgtools by downloading it to memory stick on different computer and them saving it to C drive whilst in safe mode on the infected one. It just wouldnt open. I did the same with combofix, running it from the desktop as recommended and this was successful! I will attach the results

You are a mess...you also did not install and or run SAS, MBAM, or ComboFix.

    Let's start with this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger. And also the SAS, MBAM and Combo logs.

Phew!! Think I have done everything ok. I have never had to anything that complicated on my computer before. It is certainly behaving better already. When I re-booted it, it started in normal mode, and all of the desktop items appeared. It also let me complete your instructions without freezing so, 'so far so good'! I am still using a different computer and memory stick to download/transfer files. I havent risked plugging the ethernet cable back into the infected one yet as laptop runs wirelessly through same rooter. I cannot run sas on the infected one as it I just get error message saying 'sas encountered a problem and had to close'. I will attach all logs I could get. Thank you for all your help so far (and patience)!!

    First do this:
Now please try to run and get me logs for:
    SAS
    MBAM
    ComboFix

Now back to doing some work:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following ( be sure to re-enable when we are finished):

I found TDSSserv.sys where you said it would be and disabled it. I was then able to run the 3 scans (your a genius), logs are attached. I then deleted/quarrantined as prompted. I ran MGtools analyse and could not find any of the lines you quoted. I followed the rest of you instructions to the letter and all the logs are attached.

You now are looking good....just a few things to clean up:

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2"
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    Please find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\.#

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

**CAUTION: Using P2P programs and torrent downloads can be dangerous, as they by-pass your firewall and may contain malware.

    Hi Tim,

Thanks for all your help, things are definately improving! Still have a couple of issues though. I ran disable/remove windows messenger but after i re-booted windows live messenger re-installed automatically.

I keep getting an error message from 'compaq help and support centre' saying that my DVD decoder needs upgrading and i can either update now or postpone (i just keep closing it for now). Worried its a nasty!!

Internet explorer is also giving me problems. The favourites links are not working, and if I type an address into the address bar internet explorer just pops up a blank non responding window, this happens also when i clicked on the windows xp link of your READ ME document. I have to then ctrl alt delete to get rid of it.
Hope your not feeling too harrassed!!!
    Thanks once again
    Vickie

Windows messenger is not the same thing as MSN Live messenger.
I would go ahead and do the update.....you could also go the their site and download from there if you are concerned.

Let's try resetting your IE defaults:
Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
