Hi, from surfing the net a couple days ago I somehow got a pretty nasty infection. Here's the full story, the logs are attatched.

It started while I was surfing the net. My anti-virus, Avira, popped up with something infected in the temporary internet files folder. I selected to remove it. A bit after that my computer started to run a bit sluggish. Then when I was closing down my browser the computer rebooted. It didn't just reboot straight out, it went through the normal reboot cycle (just like if I clicked start->shutdown->reboot). After it rebooted it continued to run slow. It'd run for 15-20min then reboot. If I opened the task manager it would come up for 2-3min, then just close. Then it started freezing up. After about 15-20min the brower would freeze, then 10-30sec or so later the cursor would freeze and the system would be hard locked.

I tried running a few programs. I opened spybot and went to update, but it said it couldn't find the server. I booted into safe mode, but it did the same things. I ran combofix and it said it detected rootkit behavior. The rebooting disappeared and it seemed to run a bit better, but still a touch slow. But, then I got a BSOD, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, stop 0x000000A...

I started suspecting it might be hardware, so I booted to my windows 7 install. I ran that for a while and it ran just fine, no slow down or anything.

So, I booted back to XP ran system file checker thinking maybe it modified some system files. After running that I looked under events and there were a few files it said it couldn't replace. So, next I did a windows repair install. It kept freezing at 34min, but I eventually got it to finish.

Then I ran all of the recommended scans, looks like a rootkit. I need to make sure this is completely gone before I reconnect to the internet. My ISP started redirecting all of my internet traffic because they detected malicious activity from my IP. I also noticed I now have a folder called "HelpAssistant" under "Documents and Settings", which was created about the time the infection began (I don't use remote invitations and the account doesn't show up under User accounts in the control panel).

To fix the MBR rootkit, is running "mbr.exe -f" the recommended fix? Can I just delete the helpassistant folder, or do I need to do something special? I've been using Avira for my antivirus, it seems to get a lot of false positives and didn't do very well stopping this, is there something better I should use?

While running MGtools I got a popup saying NTVDM has encountered a system error c0h.

Also, as you're looking at the logs it might be helpful to know I have windows 7 on the C: drive and windows xp on the d:. The infection happened while using xp. And all the scans were done under xp.

    Thanks for your help!

I ran fixmbr under the recovery console, and rootrepeal doesn't list the rootkit anymore. Anymore scans or fixes I should do to make sure it's completely gone?

Yes! First you need to delete the below which is not where we requested ComboFix be saved.
    d:\documents and settings\Nick\Desktop\Anti-spyware\ComboFix.exe

The download and save the current version of ComboFix.exe directly to your Desktop as required.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 12

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
