I infected my system from a borrowed thumb drive . I have run some scans & was able to remove the folder that was in windows x86 folder . But it seems I still have something going on because the computer seems normal for a while then the hdd light start going almost solid and it is hard to do anything so I just unplug the internet till it stops . Have not used the computer since .

OK, I'd like you to run this as well please....

Please download the latest version of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: Make sure you download the correct version for your PC. Only the correct version will work.
    • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your next reply.
    • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

    Hi there ... :)

NOTE: This script was written specifically for this user for use on this particular computer. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.
    Download Fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt on your Desktop. Make sure you save it as a txt file.

    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your Desktop.
    • Now I want you to disconnect your PC connection to the internet by unplugging the cable ( if it is wireless then temporarily shutdown the wireless network ).
    • Run FRST64.exe by right clicking on it and selecting Run As Adminstrator
    • Click the Fix button just once and wait.
    • Your computer should reboot after the fix runs.
    • Reconnect your internet connection after reboot so you can come back here to continue.
    • The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) please upload this new log to your next reply.
    Then attach the below log:

      • Fixlog.txt

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

The desktop.ini files are showing because hidden files and folders were set to show whilst you went thru our procedures. Once you follow final steps you will not see them. ;) The logs look good. Surf around for a day or so if you like, then come back and let me know how things are running again. I will then post final steps to you if all is still okay.

Run FRST like you did in post #5. Upload log. If I see no malware, then I will have to refer you to the software forum.

McDave, I suggest that you figure out what this program is doing C:\Program Files (x86)\WinWebUse
Perhaps it is the cause of all the activity? A second guess would be AVG.

I looked for it in the uninstall programs but it is not in there ,also look for it in cc cleaner tools/ uninstall programs . I have no idea what it is I think it might have shown up with this virus . Internet searches about it were inconclusive ?

    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. upload that report in your next reply.

Now run FRST64.exe again (just a scan, not a fix) and upload the new log for me to see.

Are you comfortable in the Windows Registry? OTL cannot seem to deal with those entries. Do you think you'd be okay to manually delete them yourself? If so, once done, reboot and rescan again with SystemLook, upload log.

Ok I think I did this correct . Do you think we should do a reboot also to see if the reg. change worked ?

Looks good now. Is your PC working any better with this removed?

Also so that we can check your current status, now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Thankyou Chas, you nailed it. ;)

Mcdave if all is well, you can follow these steps below:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  36. Mcdave

    Mcdave Private E-2

So I did the finishing cleanup stuff . Also read the other items I should do ,I found I had some windows updates to do , but on reboot the hdd started going nuts again & the weird thing is I went from about 137 gb free and a blue line under my c : drive to only 20gb free and red . I do have a system restore point if that would be helpful please let me know what the next step is or I'm I going to have to just format and rebuild this system which would be a last resort .

  37. Mcdave

    Mcdave Private E-2

I just looked at hdd after my post & it is better now I guess , but what is up with the hdd space usage ? 465 gb hdd looks like something added like 308 ish gb to hdd

  38. Mcdave

    Mcdave Private E-2

just looked at last post , I mean something added about 117 gb to the hard drive to make it have only about 20 gb free and the status bar red ? This afternoon the computer seems good and hdd light pretty normal .

  39. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Let's take a quick look to see if anything new appeared.

Download the current version of MGtools and save it to your Desktop.

Disable UAC as requested in the READ & RUN ME FIRST.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista, Win7, Win8, or Win10 don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Question: Have you been doing any video/movie downloading or editing that could consume large amounts of diskspace? What about installing games? I noticed the Sims which is a huge space hog.

No I didn't install any new programs just ran system update then after reboot the hdd had jumped up like 100 gb . I tried to download mgtools but the download fails the first time then when I retry it shows up as just a white icon on the desktop that windows doesn't recognize.

  41. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I didn't ask this! I want to see if any new malware...etc appeared. Try downloading MGtools.exe with a different browser ( I suggest IE if you were not using IE ). Also make sure you disable your protection software first to avoid having it get in the way.

  42. Mcdave

    Mcdave Private E-2

here is the log file . Update on computer status the hdd is now at 186 gb free space just by sitting over night I had not done anything and when I checked it there is now space ??????? hdd drive and computer seems to be normal ,but using ie or chrome to downloading any kind of files seem to be blocked or come with warnings not to allow it ? I don't know if both browsers were reset or something. The last time I was doing final cleanup and did a reboot is when the hdd loaded up and seemed to go crazy again for awhile ,Let me know if you see any problems Thank you .

And as far as the browsers go, you have to allow the browsers to download what you want to download. Most modern browsers have now built-in protection mechanisms which some more advanced users ( me included ) find extremely annoying and intrusive but it is there for the intermediate and novice users.

Yes I will post final instructions at the end of this message.

All the items listed above. :)

    Our final steps:
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:

      • For Windows 8 and 8.1 system restore see this link: Win 8 System Restore - How to enable/disable
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
