Infected with the notorious Windows 7 Antivirus 2012

I am trying to follow the step process however I cannot get UserAccountControlSettings.exe (gives me the error: Application Not found) along with msconfig. (I replaced from another computer but will not allow me to remove the old and replace with new). And lastly, Defogger will not run either.

All specified applications were downloaded from another computer onto a USB.

    I am running Windows 7.

    Please help.

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks, jayrab!

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3189/windowsrepair.gif Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop on the PC with the infection.

Open up this newly created folder and then open the "files" folder (...\windows repair v1.5.8\files)
From here, locate the fix_exe_hijack.inf file and then Right-mouse click it one time, then choose "Install".
Once you have done this, you should now be able to open applications again.
Let me know the results or if you need additional help.

    Thank you!

However I am now little concerned. I havent ran any of the programs (SuperAntiSpyware, Malware) and just turned on my computer and that virus seems to be gone? I am not getting any pop ups or anything from it... is that because of defogger?

    You're welcome :)
    No.

Then.... where might it have gone? Lol.

Probably still lingering, just not active. Some of these FakeAVs are a little buggy. Consider yourself lucky :)

I would recommend completing the scans from the Malware Removal Guide.

I will continue to do that and report back my progress.

    Thank you again.

Ran all scans and here are the logs

Okay first of all I should again mention that I was infected with a virus that pretended to be Windows AntiVirus 2012. It was consistently doing pop ups and trying to "download" itself. However at one point it all stopped. As if, he had just removed itself. Another person has told me that sometimes it can be buggy, still there but not active.

I do want to know is how I can be sure that it did get removed, rather than just ghosting itself and hiding in the background? I still have icons that got changed with that little blue and yellow shield once the virus had hit me. What do I do about these? Does this mean the virus is still there?

    Logs attached.
MGTools didn't create a compressed .zip folder so i just posted filelog.txt

    Should everything be okay?
I am just concerned that virus disappeared before I did anything and just want to make sure its gone and not stealing my info.

    Thanks.

Did you run MGtools.exe from the root of C: as requested? It looks like you may have run it from E: which may be a flash drive.
    Code:
     Directory of [B][COLOR="Red"]E[/COLOR][/B]:\MGtools
You also have not attached the log from ComboFix which was requested. Did you have trouble running this?

    Good job :)
Yes. It will be removed when we uninstall ComboFix (after malware removal).

You have too many Antivirus applications installed:
    • Ad-Aware
    • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011
Please choose to keep one and uninstall the other.

    Also uninstall the below:
    • DVDVideoSoftTB Toolbar (source of Conduit)
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17 (outdated)

    -
    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4930/combofix.gif Fixing items using ComboFix
Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.txt on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9049/javaz.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: jre-7u2-windows-x64.exe

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3214/baticonvista7.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Do you have User Account Control (UAC) turned on or off?

    View Step #2 here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139681

If you have not turned it off already, please do so now and then reboot.

UAC has been off and computer rebooted a couple times at this point. The combofix icon was fine after I did all the scans and this morning is when the icon got changed.

    Can you be more specific?
How far along did you get?

Just combofix and malware disappeared but it was just the icon for malwareantibytez that disappeared.
The extra icons were word documents that are now being displayed as ~$<name of document>

Is this the proper Java i need to install?:
    Windows x86 Online 0.85 MB jre-7u2-windows-i586-iftw.exe
    Windows x86 Offline 19.35 MB jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe

    both?

This is all normal. All these extra icons will go away when we finish cleaning up your system.

Choose this one (and only this one): Windows x86 Offline 19.35 MB jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe

    Much better.

It appears that your Windows Firewall is broken. Can you verify.

Your latest logs are clean, just some residual OS damage (like the firewall).

Here is a fix for removing Kaspersky from the Security Center Cache.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3189/windowsrepair.gif Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now open Repair_Windows.exe
    • Go to Start Repairs tab.
    • Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
      • Repair WMI
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.

Yes, it's broken due to the ZeroAccess rootkit (you were infected with this, but it's gone now). We can repair it if you want -- we've had a high success rate with this in the past OR you if you want to use a Firewall (recommended that you do), you may want to try an alternative such as Comodo Firewall.

A full list can be found here: Firewalls

Another non-harmful file that will go away once we clean-up.

First - let me know which route you want to take regarding the Windows 7 Firewall.

Do i need to do the "toggle system restore" step of the malware guide? I know it told me to wait to make sure all infections were gone.

    Good choice ;)

Are you having any other computer problems?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
Take care and be safe! :)
