    Hi,

I picked up a Trojan a couple of weeks ago that I've been trying to shift without success. The dodgy files are in my Windows/temp folder - $67we.$ and $$$dq3e. There may be more, but these are the ones I've identified.

I've downloaded and run all the software you suggested and the logs are attached. The only one I had trouble with was Malware Bytes - it crashed and went to a blue screen.

I really appreciate the work you guys do and I hope you can help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop
    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run it and follow any prompts.
      • If the tool detects an mbr infection
        • please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
        • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes after bootup, and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
      • If the tool DOES NOT detect an mbr infection and completes running:
        • Click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • mbr -f
        • Make sure you leave a space between mbr and the -f
        • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
        • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, you must shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
        • Give it about 5 minutes after the bootup and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
No matter what happens with the above, attach the above logs and then immediately continue with the below in normal boot mode!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi,

The link to helpasst_mebroot_fix doesn't work. Any other ideas how I can download it?

    Thanks

    Hi again,

I figured out how to run helpasst_mebroot_fix and have run everything you suggested.

All logs are attached. Things seem to be running better (ie, explorer opened first time) and those dodgy files in my windows/temp folder seem to have gone.

Does this mean my system is okay and safe now? Also, do you know of any good ways I can protect my machine in future? Clearly, my Norton programme is rubbish.

    Many thanks,

    Wint

    You're welcome.

Sorry about the broken link. I fixed it now to avoid copying and paste the broken one into other fixes.

You have a little more to do.

First delete the below left over folder from the infection. Let me know if you have any problem doing this.
    C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant.YOUR-903BA3C7A7

Now delete the below left over folders from things you no longer have installed:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg9
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Comodo Downloader
    C:\Program Files\AVG
    C:\Program Files\COMODO
    C:\$AVG

Now uninstall the very outdated: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi there,

    Many thanks again.

I did everything on the list. Just a couple of questions:

    - There was one file on my C drive that looked dodgy - C:\$WIN_NT$~BT. Is this okay?
    - I know there was a problem with a Help Assistant folder and I noticed - when I ran SAS - a file called Help Assistant backup. Do you think that's okay?

    - Do you think it's worth changing passwords for Yahoo, etc. Do you think all this might have been compromised?

    - Am I clean? Do you think I'm okay to use credit card again on my system?

Once again, I'm truly grateful for your help - you've made my month by fixing this.

It is just a Microsoft left over. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823598

You can delete the below left over folder:
    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\
    HELPAS~1.YO~ 3 Apr 2010 "HelpAssistant.YOUR-903BA3C7A7"

It would not hurt to be safe.

That is why I gave final instructions. ;) However there are never any guarantees that a PC is clean after being infected. There only only probabilities. In all probability, you are likely to be clean. If you need a guarantee then you will have to delete your hard disk partitions, recreate partitions, format, and then reinstall from scratch from clean uninfected original media. Just doing a format and reinstall would not be adequate.
