    Hello,

My laptop got an infection where everytime I tried to double click internet explorer a balloon would pop up in the lower right hand corner saying that I needed to install a certain virus protection software. I'm sorry, but I don't know the exact name as this happened a few days ago.

After running several programs including, AVG 9.0, CCleaner, Adaware, and Avast I finally got to the point where I could double click internet explorer without getting those messages but I could not access the internet.

I came upon your website and ran through the steps of the READ and RUN ME FIRST guide. Everything went well until I got to the cleaning steps for Windows XP. Here is the info for that section:

    32 bit version of windows

1.) Super Anti Spyware - could not install the program even after renaming it to SAS.exe, had to run the portable version. The portable version would not allow me to update. The scan ran and found 14 problems in the register. The problems were fixed but after the reboot of the computer I could not find the log file.

2.) Malwarebytes - ran without incident, log file attached

3.) ComboFix - ran without incident, log file attached

4.) RootRepeal - ran without incident, log file attached

5.) MGTools - Double clicked, the MGTools folder was created and the batch files were copied, but nothing seemed to run. A black window briefly flashes. Log files were not created.

After running these I am able to get to the internet, but I'm worried there may be something else wrong since I was not able to install Super Anti Spyware and MGTools.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Please use this tool to uninstall AVG and then see if you can't run MGTools:

Please go here and download and run the AVG Removal Tool.

If the MGTools folder was created, then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Did you set this up:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

    If not, see this:
    Change Proxy Settings.

It looks like the scans took care of any malware in you system, but use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\documents and settings\Mike\Local Settings\Application Data\ejemoprkh

Tell me what issues you are still having.

Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply. The laptop was at work and I haven't been there for the past couple of days.

The proxy settings were already unchecked in internet options.

I went ahead and deleted the folder.

It looks like I am not having any more problems. I am able to access the internet and I am not getting any weird anti-virus messages. If you think I am done, I really appreciate your help.

Good to know. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
