First, I would quit listening to the friends about the AV's. ;)

Next, I want to clarify that BitTorrent is safe, the content is where the infections come from and not all are infections. You have to be very careful when using BitTorrent or any programs like it today.

Did you run Malwarebytes? If so, please attach the log to your next post.

Finally, why did you attach two MGLogs??

    Hi,

First I would like to thank you for your time!! I will post the log from malwarebytes to this reply, as I must have forgotten....oopps. As for the MGtools multiple logs, the second one i posted was because I accidently forgot to disable the UAC, so I did that, and re-ran the MGtools, and the one by itself is from the log. I hope this helps, and thank you again, your time is truley appreciated.

    Step 1:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 3:
    Default Security Settings

    To Default Security Settings:
    For Internet Explorer 6 users:
Click Start > Run > type inetcpl.cpl and press ENTER, when Internet Properties comes up navigate to the Security Tab and click Default Level for the following:
    • Internet
    • Local Intranet
    • Trusted Sites
    • Restricted Sites.
    Click OK to exit.

    For Internet Explorer 7 users:
Click Start > Run > type inetcpl.cpl and press ENTER, when Internet Properties comes up, navigate to the Security Tab and simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button. Click OK to exit.

    Step 4:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Step 5:
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Alright, wow, I am so impressed with your talents! Thankfully, you give lamens step by step instructions, that I was easily able to follow, because after reviewing some of the logs, wholy crap, how do you understand that stuff??!!

    A few questions,

    1. I am going to switch back to Shaw Secure, because its what I am most comfortable with, and, as a starving actor, the price is right(free), but I won't do so until you tell me its safe.

    2. Should I try and hunt out the original file that was downloaded from a torrent site "Goldenpalace casino" the game i was trying to get?

    3. I always wonder about the application list (ctl + alt + del) brings up, is there a way you can give me a ball park of how many apps should be running, and how these can affect the speed of my comp.

As far as my computer, to be honest, if Norton hadn't detected these trojans, I am not sure i would have know the were there. I haven't experienced any really noticable effects. There was a little lag in the desktop I guess, like the icons would reset themselves. Does that make sense?

I have attached my logs, and will be patiently awaiting your response. I am truly endebited to you, and all the wonderful hep you offer her! Thanks so much

Oh ya and before i forget,

sorry, but when i did step 3, i wasn't able to reset anything, because the default button was "greyed" out, I assumed that it was because they were already at thier default settings, but i thought you might want to know.

I'm not familiar with Shaw Secure but if that's what you are comfortable then that's fine. I personally use Avast! AntiVirus and Comodo Firewall and I really like both of them. In my next post, I will confirm if your logs are clean.

As I tell everyone, be very careful what you download from Torrents or any Peer to Peer network as they are thousands of malware infected files out there.

It depends on how many startup items you have and how many programs you have running. At this current moment I have 37 processes running so it can vary but is usually around 20-30.

Yes, this the primary goal of malware. Due to it's stealth it's becoming more and more difficult detect.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significan amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Good morning!! I guess its okay to go ahead now? The logs were okay? Wow am I ever glad I didn't totally wipe my PC. Regarding question one in my last post.....sorry after I re read it I realized I wasn't very clear. I think the original file that I downloaded from torrent site is still somewhere on my computer. Would it be safe to search for it, and delete it?

  11. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Yes, if it's still there you can safely delete it.

How to Protect yourself from malware!

It wasn't long after that I noticed some things that lead me to believe that I am still infected with some sort of virus.

I use Firefox to browes most of the time(unless a site requires IE) and while using firefox, it was crashing quite often. Also, the icons on my desktop where "reseting" themselves, and lastly, my virus protection had another attack be a trojan entitled "W32\Agent.GNU

I was able to qurantine it, and then right after that it came at me again. I followed the same instructions as before, and quarantined it a second time.

" Target: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{106CF321-99A3-4E3A-9103-1BD027606A99}\RP3\A0000937.exe" from the log of my virus protection.(I did delete these both as per RUN ME READ ME)

So I immediatley referd to the RUN ME READ ME, and competed that process again, thikning i may still have "back doors open" and a sick computer.

I have attached logs, I hope that I can get through this, thanks again for all your time.

You're getting that alert because you did not complete all of the final instructions.

Pay close attention and read carefully, see step 9 to address that alert.
