Up until now I've had no problem installing Power point to computers with prior XP editions using an old Windows 98 second addition disc .

I just purchased a new dell laptop with XP media and cannot install Power point off of my trusty old disc!

I've tried the compatibility wizard but get the message "You cannot install Windows 98 while running this version of windows". I do not want to install Windows 98 but simply select power point on the disc for a selective install.

When I hit the "explore" for the windows 98 disc I get "Please reinsert your Windows 98 CD-Rom". My computer and XP operating system obviously recognize the cd but when I click the seach for specific program on the disc it will not let me in.

I hope there is some way to work around this to avoid having to purchase a newer version of PPT. Thanks for any help!

Have you tried copying the data to the hard drive & installing from there?

Just copied to hard drive. Didn't work. Still got the "You cannot install Windows 98 while running this version of windows" nag when I tried to open setup exe. Great suggestion but didn't work.

Did you try the power point install file?

Hipster, I tried looking fot the ppt install file early on in this process. I seem to recall no problem finding the install file in the past but can't seem to locate it now. I've tried a folder search and cannot turn up anything that seems to relate to power point. I do find a bunch of "cabinet" zipped files. I randomly selected some of them and did not find anything power point related.

I'm beginning to question myself as to whether this W98SE(E) disc has been my source for PPT in the past. However, it has to be. I opened all of my other old discs and did not find PPT. The last time I installed PPT from an/this old disc I should have noted on it's jacket "PPT from this disc".

This W98SE(E) disc is the one we always use here at the office to install MS Word on new computers that do not come with Word installed. I 'm pretty sure that's how I ran across PPT and started to install PPT on our computers all of which have XP.

The only other discs I have came with newer computers and will only install to those computers. Anyway, I do not find PPT on any of them.

Before spending more time on this, do you happen to know if PPT was included on the W98SE(E) disc? Thanks.

That explains why I can't find PPT on the W98SE disc. Man, I must be going crazy. I wonder where I could have gotton it from. One of the disc's from one of our replacement computers must have had PPT on it. Would PPT have been included as a "surprise" extra on one of the Corel Word Perfect discs that come with a new Dell computer?

If one of your PCs was an OEM build ( ie DELL, HP etc ) then its possible that PPoint was on a restore CD from one of those PCs.

PowerPoint only comes as part of MS Office ( certain versions ) and as standalone iirc, but as I mentioned above Office may have been bundled with one of your PCs.

Or somewhere you have a full MS Office CD?

Probably the same as here in respect to DELLs as I only used them as a example of OEM system builders, we use DELLS in work but they come blank with nothing installed ( clean HDs ) our IT dept install necassary softwares as we deal with MS VLS, all to do with security.

Some UK PC suppliers IIRC, Advent dont supply the CDs so you have to create your own, hence possible Office as part of the build spec will end up on the restore CD ( however not noticed this in the last few pcs I have seen from Advent, they as you say are original Office CDs ) , as we both know, their are many variences to Pre-Built PCs depending on country of origin.

but suggestion was offered as a thought.

Success!!! It really helps to have the correct disc! I went through my collection of old disc's and there it was...MS Office97, Professional. "Word" was even written on the cover. This is the disc that we use to install word on computers that don't come with it. Also in the bundle on this CD is PPT. Installed like a charm. No problems at all installing it with XP. For future I wrote "Power Point" on the cover to remind me this is the CD to use.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
