Install update on shutdown message

    Hi

This is probably a stupid question and I'm being over cautious, but on shutting down my PC I got the following message as part of the shutdown "box":-

Click Turn Off to install important updates and turn off your computer. Click here to turn off without installing updates.

The Turn Off button has what looks like the Microsoft Security Shield over it.

Although it looks genuine I cannot remember having seen it before. I have automatic updates set and usually when updates have taken place a pop-up box tells me the downloading is complete and gives me the choice of shutting down immediately or later. I didn't even notice any updates were downloading. I went on MS Update site but couldn't find anything on there .. hence asking for your help/advice.

    Thanks in advance

Just to get the ball rolling .... are you the only user on the computer?
If there is an administrative account, which is where the updates may be being downloaded to, you may get the message when shutting down with a different user account.

This is perfectly normal after service pack 2. I think it is for updates which are not important enough to actively prompt you to reboot, but still need the computer to reboot to install.

    Thanks for your replies

TimW: Although not the only user, mine is an admin account.

Gecks: Glad to hear it is normal, strange that I've been on SP2 for ages but can't remember it happening before (but could have happened to one of the other users I suppose) ... or could be memory going in old age!

Unfortunately I had to go to bed before getting your replies so chose to shutdown WITHOUT installing ... have now tried shutting down again and didn't get the message this time. Do you know if the updates will be picked up again the next time windows finds some? If not, how do I find what they were and re-install them if necessary?

    Thanks again for your help

Two possibilities .... start/turn off computer/check the options (turn off, restart, etc.) and see if the option is still there to install before shutting down.
Otherwise, right click on start/explore/ then go to tools and choose file folder options and select show all hidden files, then under C:/Doc's and settings/Administrator/local settings ..... look in the temp folder and see if the updates are there....

Forgot to mention .... if you haven't clean out the temp file in a while it may have updates that have already been installed ....compare them with the ones in the "add/remove programs" listings.

Thanks Tim. I've looked in the temp folder but the names are meaningless to me I'm afraid!

Looking in Add/Remove programs, very useful tip that (thanks!) - must admit I had missed the check option for showing windows updates - one update was installed on the 10th May (KB913580), the one previous was on the 4th May (KB900485). However on checking history on windows update site, two were successfully installed on the 10th, the other one being KB890830, malicious software removal tool. On reading about them both the malicious software removal one doesn't say it can be removed in Add/Remove, so presume that is why it isn't there.

On doing a check on the update site for any required updates, the only one it came up with (on clicking on custom button) was a new Windows Update program, but the list on what facilities it gives doesn't seem any different to what I already have (e.g. removing from Add/Remove, etc).

As the update history didn't list any as failed I'm hoping it should all be OK!

Thanks again for your time and help

If you have automatic updates enabled on a machine, that machine will typically (by default) download any updates at 3am.

Now, in this situation, your computer has automatically downloaded the updates. When you do a shutdown, it will notify you that you may want to install these updates, during the shutdown process. I have seen this on many occasions in the past. Perfectly normal.
