i'm currently trying to find out wat i will have to do to get my vid card to overide the onboard vid card.
    motherboard P4M900-M4 running xp
should the bios automatically override the onboard for the newly installed card ?

You will just need to install drivers for the card after you put it in. No need to touch the BIOS.

Welcome to MGs!! No, the BIOS won't override it. You'll need to get into the BIOS and disable the on-board video. Re-boot your machine and the POST screen press the 'Delete' button numerous times, until it says 'entering setup.' When the blue screen appears, find a heading something like 'integrated perhials (sp)' Once there, find the video reference and disable it. Once done, press 'esc,' F-10, and then 'yes.' Your machine will re-boot and your on-board video will be disabled. However, at the POST screen, not all MBs use the 'delete' key to get into the BIOS. You may have to try something like F-1, or possibly F-2. Depends on the MB. It usually is 'delete,' but I needed to give you other options just in case it wasn't! Hope that helps!!

    Hi All,

There are two ways this could go. Some BIOS setups have the ablility to disable the onboard Video in which case you should disable it. If the BIOS setup does not have that ability then it is probably automatic.

    Good Luck, Jim

Sorry, I hadn't heard of teh non-auto type. Thanks for the clarification Jim. I guess 2sunz could try it either way.

I have a question on that. What if you do this and the computer doesn't see the new card? Wouldn't the person then be stuck with a black screen? How do you work around that?

In the very rare case that the card is not recognized (usually because either the card or mobo is faulty) you'd simply remove the video card and reset the BIOS using the jumper on the motherboard. ALL motherboards with onboard video are set to use the onboard video by default, so resetting would take care of it....

Almost every motherboard made in the past 3-4 years is automatic. However, there is usually a setting for "initialize video" and you'd select either the onboard, PCI, PCIX, or AGP as your situation would require. However, this is usually irrelevant on most modern boards. Even if it's set to initialize the onboard video, and there's a video card installed, the picture will go through the video card regardless of the setting if the monitor is plugged in to the video card. If the monitor is plugged in to the onboard, you'd probably have a picture until Windows loads the video driver, which would then switch the video out to the video card, and the screen would go black.

    Hi Plodr,

On boot the video driver always comes from the BIOS and switches to the Video Driver after the OS gets loaded to the point that the Video driver from the HD/OS is available. That's so you can get to the BIOS Setup without loading the OS if necessary and then to load a Video driver when installing an OS and the OS is running.

    Good Luck, Jiim

    Thanks guys.
The one and only vid card I installed was in a computer more than 3-4 years old.
I will remember, if I get in a situation with a black screen, after fiddling with a video card that a reset the BIOS is the trick.
