Installed SP2 - have 'some' problems.

Things were clickin' along fine, but people kept telling me to get with the times and install SP2 as it helps protect my computer. It definitely screwed up my computer. I can no longer open any .jpgs; my folders no longer open in that easy to use tree formation in the left panel of Windows Explorer, My Documents etc; I can't rearrange Favourites menu as rebooting puts them back in a semi-alphabetical order; when I left click on My Computer or Recycling Bin icons I get an empty right pane. I'm sure there are more things that I haven't noticed yet as I only installed SP2 yesterday. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, unfortunately, SP2 isn't forgiving when it comes to compatibility issues, spyware, or previous damage.

    --Have you tried Safe Mode?

--Have you tried a new user account?

What exactly should I use SafeMode for?
No, I haven't tried a new user account and not sure why this would help.
I did a full system scan with reputable antispyware, antivirus etc in SafeMode before installing SP2 and my system was clean. Isn't there a way to reset or tweak things to the way they were - which was fine - before SP2? I mean, why would I not be able to open .jpgs, folders, my computer etc?

SP2 doesn't just go intoa system and decide to trash it.

--To see if your problem still occurs, of course.

Quite a few registry settings are on a per user basis, so if you create a new account and it works fine, what would that tell you? ;)

Sorry to be so dim about SafeMode, but how exactly do I go about seeing if my problem still persists in SafeMode? Just by opening files, folders, jpegs etc?
Once again, sorry to be so dim about this and thank you once more for your patience/interest in helping me with all this.

You are correct. Test opening things etc.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

I don't know if this really has anything to do with it but those specs are way low for winXP especially the RAM.

It doesn't, so if you don't have anything to add to help out, don't post.

    Thank you.

There is no difference in SafeMode - jpegs don't open and folders are still not in that tree config. Now what? I'm tempted to just uninstall SP2 as I have managed to live without it sans problems.

No, but its terribly annoying not to get full progress updates. Did you create a new user account and see if the problem persists there?

I typically forgot about create a new account while wading through all this frustration. I'll give it a try. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer doesn't seem to be on my system any longer. Did a Search, manually looked through folders but cant' find it. Maybe it got deleted by SP2 or something else? Do you know where it 'resides'?

Its a dll application, not a program, afaik.

    Its controlled by shimgvw.dll.

    It can be reregistered by:

    regsvr32 shwimgvw.dll

Adrynalyne, the guest account doesn't do anything differently. I have tried both enabling regsvr32 shwimgvw.dll and disabling the same with a slightly different name. No go. Also tried a registry fix called 'pictureandfaxrestore.reg' but that made no difference either.
    Any other ideas?

No, but i'll keep looking into it.

Have you removed SP2 to see if the problem goes away?

    What antivirus do you use?

Do you enjoy relying on 3rd party apps to patch the holes in your OS? SP2 has important security features.

As for system restore--why? It should be in add/remove programs.

Adrynalyne, yes I uninstalled SP2. The problems persist. I am using AntiVir, the latest version - 7 I believe. Ive read elsewhere that it does cause some issues. I'm going to try avast!, unless you have reservations about it and/or a better suggestion. It has to be a free one though, I'm broke.

jimrichards1964@gmail.com, my SystemRestore never has more than one previous restore available and sometimes only the same days restore available. Is it not set up right?

I disagree with you, and I worked for MS for 4 years.

    Why don't people believe you?

To start with, you have been here 5 minutes, posted something you know nothing about, jumped into troubleshooting a thread you know nothing about, and already have two usernames for this board, which I find fishy, and will be looking into.

Welcome to MG, sit back, learn a few things, help when you can. But do not think for one second that telling someone that security updates are not needed (aka SP2) is going to receive a warm reception.

Adrynalyne, I ditched AntiVir and have been running avast! for the last 3 days. The WPFV issue is still with me. Strangely though, my screen saver, which runs the same jpegs etc that I can't access, works just fine.

Interesting--let me think on it some while you are waiting for more options.
