    Hi guys,

Its been some time since I posted here. My Windows 7 crashed a couple of days ago, and I tried to install Ubuntu over it. My hard disk partitions were as such
C: NTFS partition (size of 52GB)
D: NTFS partition (size of 100GB)

I had all the important data in D:. When I installed Ubuntu, I created the swap space and the boot partition (ext3) over the D: (I did not realize this until after I installed Ubuntu :-( ). But the Ubuntu partition is only 72GB.
One more thing, I created Linux partitions as logical partitions instead of primary partitions. I could not create another primary partition as there were already 3 primary partitions present.

My question is.. can I recover any of the data in the previous D:?

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

(btw.. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop)

Ok.. I guess I need to rephrase my question a bit..

Can I recover information from a NTFS partition in Linux? Is there any linux software to recover data?

    Thanks. :-D

What about a boot cd with utilities on it? Do you have UBCD? Or any other? Hiren?

I am quite new to Linux and Ubuntu. I have heard of data recovery softwares on Windows, but dont know abt such softwares on Linux.

And no.. I do not have UBCD or Hiren. Are they data recovery softwares?

    Thanks for the reply..

they are bootable discs, freeware, with many different types of utilities already part of the disc. simply boot up to the disc and run any number of utilities, from hard drive recovery to memory tests and more. I believe the UBCD and Hiren both have data recovery utilities on them. Both are free to download and then burn to disc. You should be able to do that with Ubuntu but I personally have never really 'toyed' with the OS. If you download it I would put it to some other form of storage since if you put it to your HDD you could overwrite material you want off. It is possible also that any data you want could already be overwritten and unobtainable by simple data recovery software.

    Ultimate Boot CD

    Hiren's BootCD

    Download link for Hiren's BootCD

Both sites for each have a list of data recovery uts, Hiren has the greatest list but I have never used either for data recovery but if anything like Recuva from Piriform (CCleaner) it is very straightforward.

Thanks for the inputs. I`ll try out UBCD and let you know.

If you installed Ubuntu OVER the partition you want to recover, your chances of recovery are slim to none. Ubuntu would have formatted the partition to ext3 or some such file system and that means wiping what was on the partition originally.

A paid (expensive) recovery service might be able to get some information from the freshly formatted partition.

    Hey everyone.

Thanks for all the inputs. I was really lucky. I tried out UBCD and somehow I got to the point where it asked me if i wanted to recover the old partition. I selected yes. after that my linux partition crashed as well. Then when I sat about trying to re install ubuntu all over again, (I chose the option to try ubuntu from the flash drive), I found the files I needed. They were still there. Fortunately, the ubuntu partition had not written any data over that section of the drive.

SO I was able to recover what data I needed. It was just around 8-10 MB so I was quite lucky to have recovered it.

    Once again.. thanks to all.

    Hi guys,
I have exactly the same problem.
My data is gone after installing Ubunu over the NTFS partition.
I hope that UBCD will work.

Thanks for posting this issue up ! :)
