I am trying to install a portable DVD CD Drive to my Windows Vista Business 32 bit Optiplex 745 computer. I was able to install the driver but it does not show in "my computer" window.

I checked the device manager and it's not listed there. The installation manual says to reset the bios settings for a USB Universal Host Controller. Their instructions are for Windows 98 which didn't help.

I have a Dell Bios 2.6.6 Can anyone tell me how I can change the setting in Bios to have the new portable drive listed in Device Manager?

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Thank you Falconattack for your utility. Unfortunately it did not work. The utility could not find the device. I tried plugging into different ports with the same results. It looks like I have to activate a port in Bios so it can be read.

    Thanks again.

Does the external have a Y-connector?

If not, one port might not supply sufficient power.

We have an Optiplex 745 in the house running Win 7 Pro 32 bit. I attached my LG DVD portable burner then turned the computer on and got no recognition. So I removed the USB plugs then plugged them in again. I immediately got a popup about installing device drivers. Then it said it was ready for use. I had a music CD in and VLC fired up and started playing the first track.
If you haven't done so, attach the portable DVD/CD device after Windows loads and see what happens.

I have to swap out the keyboard to get into the BIOS because the current lighted on doesn't get me into the BIOS. Let me look through my notes and perhaps I have the info written down. I hate crawling on the floor under the desk and swapping keyboards.

YES, I wrote the info down. The BIOS is v 2.3.1 with a date of 5/21/07.

So your BIOS is newer than mine.

Thank you Plodr for your suggestion. That was the solution, I don't have a Y cable but it did come with two separate cables with different end plugs. The second cable was to be used if the driver wasn't running smoothly. The extra power was all that was needed to read the port. All is working fine now.

MajorGeeks has come through for me again especially you, Plodr, who has helped me out in the past.

    Thanks again.

I love it when something is easily fixed!
