If I find any XP x 64 notes/ files, etc:, I will come back and post them.

Thanks baklogic. Whether it's Vista 64 or XP64, I think we'll all be playing catch-up when manufacturers/Microsoft catch up themselves to X64.

I'm trying to get my printer installed again using the new X64 driver but it's not working this time. I get the printing capability but not the scanning capability. I think I'm going to wind up contacting HP. I could have saved $50 by just getting a printer, since this is all that this one can do now.

I suppose the faxing direct via the phoneline did not work, then ?
I honestly think you could take it back, as it was missold to you, or, was the advice from a different salesman ?

Either way, I did forget to give you the extra star, for perseverence, and getting back to life - hard way to learn, but better to experience it now, than when you have everything on your computer, and at a time you might just have forgot to make that backup (like we all STILL DO )

    Denise_M MajorGeek

Well, I made a backup but it's on an external hard drive so I couldn't access it. I want to make a Windows Automated System Recovery disk once I find out how to do it.

I just got off of Live Chat with HP. It took over 4 hours but I have printing, scanning and faxing capabilities :dancer . I am perserverant, lol, as you guys might have guessed. When I'm on a mission, I have blinders on. I don't know why HP said that faxing capabilities couldn't be restored, though, when they can.

How are you feeling baklogic? Any better than this morning or yesterday? The flu can be miserable. I hope you get over it soon. Don't listen to Fred, though. Beer doesn't help :D

Beer is good, last time I had the flu they said drink plenty of fluids, beer is a fluid...

Just joking. I do have to admire your perseverance DeniseM.:cool Sorry to be lazy, I have been busy, is the computer back up and running? (looks like it is). Work was hell today!

    Hi Fred,

Yup! It's up and running great again. I just have to install the floppy drive and then I'll be putting it in the space reserved for the prince :) Then I have the ordeal of untangling all the wires and putting different cables on the ext SATA hdds so they can be connected to the SATA ports. I'm still waiting for the card/adapter to come in the mail so I can do that.

I also have places for 2 USB 2.0 and 1 firewire port up front that I don't have the parts for, so that'll be done in the future too, and networking with my old pc. So if you think you've heard the last of me, you haven't :neener :D

I look forward to it DeniseM. If I can't help you someone else will. On my first build, I hooked up the PWR and reset plugs wrong. Took me 2 hours to figure that out!:D

Those connectors and the words underneath the ports on the motherboard are so tiny, I can understand why it happened. I looked at them and the diagram and the ports about 10 times with a flashlight and a magnifying glass . . . I'm not kidding, lol. The case came with a 1394 connector but no port for it and I have a port for reset but no connector. Figures . . . a man must've designed it . . . roflmao

    Hi,Denise,
Yes virus almost gone, but like pc's, the roots go deep.
Great to see you chirpy, and full of your next moves - My new computers got a dead motherboard :cry
    First time for yonks !
Never mind, Replacement will be here soon.
Anyway, if you remember, you can get an add in card for ie1344, if you feel you need it, and you have any space left - just remember the more slots you fill, the more you need to watch the airflow, in your computer -front fans tend to assist in dust and fluff around these, too- so extraction , then becomes more important- but, again, cross each bridge as you come to it, and you will enjoy your creation - your very own electronic baby.:wave

    Denise_M MajorGeek

Sorry to hear about your motherboard, but by the time your motherboard comes in, your virus will be gone and you'll be healthy and happy :)

I don't know what 1394 is so I don't miss it. My old pc had a slot for it too but I never had any 1394 devices to connect to it.

But regarding fans, I have only one fan . . . it's on top of the processor. The descriptin calls it a "Masscool CPU cooling fan". There is a funnel attached to the side panel with the wide opening facing the fan/heat sink. The rear has a 4" x 4" vent.

When I reboot my computer, a display screen shows the temperature (among other settings). It's usually between 37C and 39C, even if I've been on it all day and just rebooted.

I won't be adding anything for a while, though, but the front USB 2.0 ports will come in handy if or when I get a digital camera or a thumb drive. My birthday is coming up soon . . . anyone want to know my mailing address? :D

    Hi Denise

You are probably going to want another 2 fans at least
(Ive got 6, and both sides off of the case - but thats a bit over the top :D )

generally you will have a CPU fan (which you have)
an intake fan - at the lower front of your case
and an outlet fan - at the upper rear of your case.

    The fun never ends ;)

I have room for a fan in the upper rear of the case which is labelled Ventilation in the attached picture. How will I know which fan to buy?

    Another matter . . .

When I booted up this morning, My Computer now sees my DVD drive as my floppy drive. The floppy drive that I bought came in a few days ago so I installed it, thinking that it would notice it as the floppy drive. The IDE cable that I bought for the floppy has the right amount of pins for the FDD1 port. It won't fit into any other port. I Googled FDD1 and it says that it's for an external floppy drive. I plugged it in just to see if it would recognize an internal floppy. When I booted, I didn't get the message that New Hardware has been found and the floppy drive isn't recognized in My Computer.

    Any thoughts?

Ooops! I forgot to attach the picture of the rear of my case. Here it is.

Hi Denise, It is possible to put the cable to the floppy on the wrong way around, if it has not got a nib on one side. This can cause it not to show, and confuse Windows - like I said, it can get confused -if no nib, twist it around, and refit.
There is a coloured line down one side.
The coloured end goes to the motherboard

  18. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

If it has not got a coloured end, the end with a slight twisty cable bit goes on the floppy drive .

  19. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

From what I have toyed with, as long as your temperatures stay as they are, the cooling appears adequate.
If/when you need to install any extra fans, start at the back, and install a nice big 100mm fan in that grill at the back.Extracting draws air through the machine.
If you do , eventually install a front fan, fit a filter membrane behind it to stop it drawing in the fluff , and dust.

1394 was often used for things like videocams, but sata is much faster-
    Speeds of use 1394--400mb/s
    USB 2---------------480mb/s
    SATA(!) -----1.5----------1500mb/s
    SATA 11 (eSATA) 3.0------3000mb/s
Just so you knew what it is all about - speed.

I found the little nib and plugged that end into the floppy drive. The FDD1 port has a 1/4" cut-out for a rise on the plug. I plugged them in this way, rebooted but My Computer still see only Floppy Drive A.

I inserted a floppy disk into the floppy drive. It asked me if I wanted to format the disk, I clicked Yes, but it came back and said that there is no disk in the drive. When I inserted a CD disk in the DVD drive, it asked me if I wanted to format it. I said Yes. It said that "There is no disk in Drive A. Insert a floppy in Drive A and cliced Try Again." I clicked OK and it said that the disk in Drive A cannot be formatted. So it's not recognizing a disk in either the DVD or floppy drive.

If ,when everything is running o.k, you can get temperatures down around 30, it always helps.

Why is it suddenly not recognizing the DVD drive? It was fine when I went to bed last night and turned it off. This morning it's not recognizing it. I didn't change any settings yesterday except things like font size, print color, etc . . . just small, inconsequential changes. I installed about 15 programs yesterday but the DVD drive was still recognized before I shut it off.

  24. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

In case you're wondering, I connected the power supply to the floppy drive too ;)

And it's recognizing an external hard drive that's connected. I just turned it on to make sure.

It could be a case like your other computer, when you started building this one.
First of all, try shut down and restart, and see if it finds everything again, after the wire juggling.
    If not,
Open Device Manager and then open IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers,
right click the first entry (the Controller) and select uninstall,
click ok, then reboot. Windows should then find a new device and install the drivers.

  26. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

OK, this beats all! I'm beginning to wonder! I just pressed the "On" button and it cracked and fell out!!!! :crybaby

Is this a sign? Am I not supposed to have this computer? Arrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!

  27. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

I did this but it didn't find a new device and it didn't reinstall the controller.

Put your XP disc in the drive, and see if it finds it

    Denise,

Boot to safe Mode and check under the controller again to see if you've not created any ghost devices. Also go to the DVD-CD-rom Drives and delete the DVD drive from there then try the reboot again and see if it detects it this time.

I just ran a Belarc . . . I've attached a copy of it. Maybe something in it will tell you something. (I cut it into 2 pages because it was too large for 1 attachment).

If it does not recognise a disc is there, or that you have a rom drive,I would suggest go to start ,accessaries ,system tools, system restore, and see what the last automatic restore point was, and restore it to before you shut down last night - leave cables connected.

  32. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

What and where do I look for for a ghost device?

  33. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

Do you think a rollback might fix it?

  34. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

I think it is the best , at the moment, as your drive will be ther, before shutdown, last night.

  35. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

The reason that I said leave cables in place is that if, as we think they are, they are connected correctly, it should not cause a problem.

  36. Denise_M

I did about 5 system restores. I went back a couple each time: last night, in the afternoon, in the morning, and on Sunday. The only Restore Point that shows the DVD Drive was the System Checkpoint on Sunday night, right after I reinstalled Windows. I thought it was in My Computer last night, but maybe it wasn't. When I went to restore it to the System Checkpoint on Sunday night, it's no longer there. It was replaced by System Restore Points that it automatically created today. I'm going to try a Windows Repair and see if that works. If not, I'll have to do a complete reinstall again.

The floppy drive isn't being recognized by My Computer either. Could it be because I have it connected to the FDD1 port? It's the only port that has the correct number of pins for the cable. The other IDE port has too many pins for it.

  37. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

Sorry Denise. Right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager
then see what it lists - any red X's for instance? or any duplicate devices (when you know you only have one (ie a ghost device)

  38. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

    Hi Yargwel,

There are no red X's or duplicate devices. It always showed that I had a floppy drive installed when I didn't. I only installed it this morning, and it's not really seeing the one that's installed. I guess that can be considered a ghost device.

What do you mean when you say your computer now sees your DVD drive as your floppy drive? What does device manager say? BIOS recognizes them ok, right? I may advise you to look at the IRQ addresses, but I don't suspect that as a problem right now. I am just trying to figure out exactly what you mean.

  40. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

So if you click on the + sign next to the DVD drives what does it show?

  41. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

You know what Denise? Can I see your IRQ addresses for your devices? Please do this> start> control panel> performance and maintenance> system> hardware tab> device manager> view> resources by type> expand IRQ. What are your IRQ device addresses?

  42. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

    Hi Walter,

I meant that the icon for the DVD drive is the floppy icon and it says A Drive.

But it turns out that it's not really seeing it as anything. I put a blank disk in the DVD drive and a floppy disk in the floppy drive and when I clicked on the Floppy Drive icon, it says that there is no disk in the drive.

  43. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

When I click on the + next to the DVD drive, it opens and it has a DVD drive icon with a square yellow box on the bottom right hand corner of the icon. The yellow box has a black exclamation point in it.

  44. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

That means it isn't working correctly!! It generally means it is looking for a driver of some description.

If you do click on the + signs for all the branches see if there are any other exclamation points or red X's any where.

  45. walter34payton2002

    walter34payton2002 Specialist

Yeah, Denise, that is a driver issue. I think somewhere on MG there is some tutorial for that and it is pretty good for someone new to it. I don't need to see your IRQ addresses at the moment.

  46. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

    I can't do this:

    I have to do this:

Start> Control Panel> Administrative Tools > Performance & Maintenance and there's only a System Monitor with Performance Logs & Alerts.

  47. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

There aren't any Red X's in Device Manager, just the DVD drive has the yellow box with the black exclamation point in it.

  48. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

OK Walter. I think our posts overlapped. I didn't get an installation CD with the DVD drive. Nothing came with it, actually.

  49. Denise_M

    Denise_M MajorGeek

For the heck of it, I went into Device Manager the way I usually go into it. I clicked on View, Resources By Type, and Expanded Interrupt Request (IRQ). Nothing is marked at all. It says it has a Standard floppy disk controller and there's no X on it.

  50. Yargwel

    Yargwel MajorGeek

Right click on the DVD device with the yellow ex point. Then Properties> see what the message says in the box and try the trouble shooter for starters
