Ram will only go in one place and one way round (do not force it )
when you open the PC you will see normally 4 slots for ram in two different colors and along it's length you will see a small cut out and this lines up on the ram sticks, there are two white clips one at each end and when you insert the ram with a gentle push the two clips will lock it in place.

If you mention the brand, model and any numbers behind the model, we can probably find the manual online. It might be worthwhile downloading so you can refer to it any time you need information.

Not to mention, if the number of slots is less than four, say, three or two, then there might be strange limitations on what kind of RAM you can install, and how much. Things like that are worth exploring before you spend money on RAM, or open the package if you've bought it already.

I haven't seen RAMBUS in a while, but the difference between DDR and DDR2 is worth the asking, Mimsy...

All RAM slots and modules don't have identical notches...

He's already been asked for make and model of the computer and when we know that we'll know what type of RAM it is. There's too much detail to go into to be worth bothering with until we know the memory specs of the motherboard. Why spend an hour typing out an explanation for why you need to move the jumpers on a SDR-DDR hybrid board only to find out it's a DRR2 system?

Or did you want to know the difference between DDR and DDR2? :p

Agree with Mimsy. Once we get the model name and number of the laptop or PC it will be relatively straightforward to find the correct guide. If you tell us these details there might even be a video tutorial we can find.
