installing printer driver

setup.exe for driver won't run

I am trying to install a driver for my HP deskjet 5550. I downloaded the driver from HP to my Compaq Presario running windows 98SE, extracted the files, I then try the next step which is to run the setup program and nothing happens. I tried this on my dell desktop and it seems to work fine. I recently had to get the machine cleaned up from an overload of spyware etc.
I have completed all the available Windows updates and also tried installing after doing a clean boot which I found on the Microsoft knowledge base site. All this to no avail. Have also tried setup on something else we downloaded and that worked OK. I am at a loss, PLEASE HELP!
