A friend of mine has a program on his computer and i would like to burn it onto a cd and download and install it on mine. I know that I cannot just copy the the folder and put it on my computer. How would I go about doing this? This is a homemade written software program not one that has to be liscensed.

    Please help

    Greetings and welcome to MajorGeeks!

    What program is it?

If it is homemade software it may very well be stand-alone software and not need to be installed. Some programs can run directly from their folder. If this is the case just copying the folder to your computer would work.

Even if its not stand-alone software as you say, you can still write the data to disc as data files, transfer these files to your hard drive and then run the 'set-up.exe' to install!

    Regards...

Please dont think I am stupid, but I am not quite sure how to do this. The software is a little word processing program that he wrote. I could ask him how to do this, but he is a little bit big headed and will make a huge deal out of me asking him. I told him I could do it on my own. Please help

small programmes like that usually have one setup.exe wich is enough to install it in your PC. What other files are there wich you believe that should be transfered?

Hi steinmetz.....look dont get me wrong, however if your friend has developed his own word processing program, he is a smart guy and should be as proud as punch in showing you how you can install it on your system.
Maybe it is best that you 'bite the bullet' (so to speak) and ask him if he would be kind enough to do so.
I could instruct you on this procedure, however, you must be sure that the program he has written does not contain 'buggy' or 'corrupt' files, which could cause untold problems for your PC....then i would be the bad guy!
If he is running the program on his PC, then chances are he has developed a sound program, and i think it would be best if you got him to help you to install it.
I hope you understand this situation, but it would be unwise of me to expand on what i have already told you, especially if you have never attempted this procedure before.

My Regards, and best of luck!

I will look for the setup.exe file. However, I would ask him, but he just went out of state for awhile. If you could give me an idea of what to do, and if it does not work then it wont be your fault I promise. To be truthful, this guy went to court today and was sentenced to prison for 10 years.

Are you sure this is a word processing program and not a credit card processing program? ;)

How exactly do you run the program on his computer? From the desktop? Is the icon you use to start it a shortcut or an .exe? Where is the folder located, in Program Files or a different location?

Okay, the software is located on his desktop and it is a shortcut. The folder is in the program files under the c drive. Do you need to know anything else? I will be here waiting.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I was hoping it was somewhere else which might indicate it did not have an installer. I can't really suggest anything other than to try and copy the folder to your computer and see if you can run the program. You could also search the computer for any files will part of the name of the program to see if any of the results look like an installer file.

There shouldn't be an installer. We need to know the exact path of the .lnk (link) on the desktop.

If he wrote it himself, then you may be able to copy the program directly onto your own computer.
