Installing two Linux and Windows...

Well i am posting this before i recieve the... cd i picked up... Ubuntu. Also ordered Solaris.

I wanted to start learning other Operating Systems but... it's a bit too overwhelming to begin with.

First and foremost, i need to learn if i can install and dual boot both systems on my laptop?

It's achievable, i think... can i use a external disk to install one O.S. and have the other one on the laptop internal disk?

rolleyes A lot of stuff...

So thougths anyone?

 

Yep, you may install all this systems, but it's strongly recommended to install them to different partitions.

Installing the OS on the external drive is not a good idea, but it can be realized without any doubt for Linux. On the other hand you will need enough fund of knowledge for it... To make several partitions on your internal laptop drive is rather better way.
Partition magic is good for partitioning but I use Disk Director partition manager. It's easier for me and it also contains its own multiboot loader that can help create dual boot environments in case you know nothing about it.

One more thing is you ought to install OSes in the special order first Windows, then Linux).
The thing is that Windows have less smart installer can set as a default its own loader that can ignore other OS. WinXP will allow recognizing only Windows family. And all modern Linux are soled with installers that allow choosing whether to install its loader and can find all installed operating systems.
