I bought a laptop from Acer a while ago which came with XP media centre. I opted to get the upgrade to Vista, but stuck with XP on the laptop. Can I use the upgrade to install Vista on my desktop machine - is it possible to do with the Acer disk, and is it legal?

    Thanks in advance.

Let me get this straight.... you have an Acer laptop with XP Media Center. Acer sent you a disc to upgrade the XP Media Center to Vista. You don't want to upgrade the laptop to Vista. You want to use the Vista upgrade on your desktop PC. Will it work? Maybe. It depends on whether or not the Vista disc has built-in drivers designed for the laptop. If the printing on the Vista disc has the model number of the laptop, and if it says something about applications and/or drivers, then it probably will not work on the desktop, not without some problems anyway. Is it legal? Probably not. You'd have to read the EULA very carefully. Generally speaking, if the Vista upgrade came from Acer, it is designated for an Acer product, namely the laptop, and using it elsewhere is probably a violation of the EULA....

That's it exactly. Acer sent me a separate upgrade disk for the laptop as well as the Vista one, so I'm guessing the Vista disk may well not have any specific drivers on it.

Looking at it, it does say on the disk that it is only for use in Acer machines. I'm not surprised that Acer don't want it usd on another machine, but is that really enforcible? Surely if it's my copy of the software I can install it on any (one) machine I like?
