I finally went and bought Windows XP Pro, I am finally ready to upgrade from Win 98SE on my Compaq Armada 7400. I get error message "ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded error code 7" and setup quits! After a little work I found that my BIOS might have issues when ACPI is enabled, and someone told me that without ACPI enabled I can't install XP Pro, or any network based platform for that matter. So I type in Armada 7400 in google search and the first few hits are from EBay with laptops just like mine with the OS that I was told was not compatible! What to do now?

you must be able to upgrade from 98se to xp pro, its definitely possible!!!!!!
do you boot up as normal on the 98 and then once you've logged in to your user begin installation from there, or do you insert the cd straight away and begin setup from there? if you get what i mean!!!!

Searching the error string in Google brought up these microsoft articles:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812580&Product=winxp

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310064

Of particular interest to you would be the paragraph below, if you can't resolve your BIOS issue:

Perform a clean installation of Windows XP:

    1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
    2. If Windows automatically detects the CD-ROM, click Install Windows to start the Windows XP Setup Wizard. If Windows does not automatically detect the CD-ROM, click Start, click Run, type CD-ROM drive letter:\setup.exe, and then click OK.
    3. Press ENTER.
    4. Click New Installation, and then click Next.
    5. Follow the instructions on your screen.

When you receive the "Press F6 to load SCSI/Raid Drivers" prompt, press F7 to bypass Advanced Configuration and PowerInterface (ACPI) detection.

6.Finish the installation of Windows XP.
