Intel Processor Upgrade

Hi im new to this site so if this is the wrong place let me no.

I have a HP G60-549DX and i was wondering what processors are compatible with it. i would like to upgrade to a 3-3.5 GHZ or a quad core right now it has

Sadly, since your current board is a socket 478, there's not much room for upgrade. Intel stopped producing socket 478 CPUs several years ago.

To upgrade to a faster CPU you will (at the very least) have to replace the motherboard with the CPU. If you are running DDR memory, you'll have to buy DDR2 or DDR3 depending on the board. If it's a brand name PC (Dell, HP, etc.) the connectors for the power switch, reset switch and HDD light may not match the setup on the new board.

If the budget allows, I'd start fresh. It you want lots of speed at a low price, look at building a system with an AMD AM3 Quad Core CPU (about $99 on sale); a decent mATX AM3 board with on board video (about $80) and DDR3 memory (dirt cheap - about $50 for 4GB!). If your current drives are IDE (ribbon cable), jump to SATA: A 500GB HDD will set you back about $40; a DVD+RW drive about $20. Finally, it's always a wise idea to replace the power supply on a new build. Don't skimp on this; spend a few bucks more for a quality brand such as Antec, Rosewill or Corsair.

 

P4 CPUs (socket 478) up to 3.4GHz can still be found on eBay.
They can be Hyper threading or non-hyper.

That CPU is a 478-pin, Socket P Dual Core. (Penryn)
On eBay, the best I could find was a 3.2GHz (boxed,new) at $350+ .
