Bit controversial since IQ tests in themselves may also be controversial? ;) Personally, I necessarily do not believe in this particular one study or others, but it's a good subject to read and discuss I think. Do you believe in this one? Perhaps if you use Opera you may. ;)

Is Internet Explorer For The Dumb? A New Study Suggests Exactly That.

July 28, 2011 A Vancouver based Psychometric Consulting company, AptiQuant, has released a report on a trial it conducted to measure the effects of cognitive ability on the choice of web browser. AptiQuant offered free online IQ tests to over a 100,000 people and then plotted the average IQ scores based on the browser on which the test was taken. And the results are really not that surprising. With just a look at the graphs in the report, it comes out pretty clear that Internet Explorer users scored lower than average on the IQ tests. Chrome, Firefox and Safari users had just a teeny bit higher than average IQ scores. And users of Camino, Opera and IE with Chrome Frame had exceptionally higher IQ levels.

Internet Explorer has traditionally been considered a pain in the back for web developers. Any IT company involved in web development will acknowledge the fact that millions of man hours are wasted each year to make otherwise perfectly functional websites work in Internet Explorer, because of its lack of compatibility with web standards. The continuous use of older versions of IE by millions of people around the world has often haunted web developers. This trend not only makes their job tougher, but has also pulled back innovation by at least a decade. But with the results of this study, IT companies worldwide will start to take a new look on the time and money they spend on supporting older browsers.

Microsoft created a conspiracy with Internet Explorer's shell integration with Windows Explorer, and making its removal complicated, if not impossible. It is usually criticized that this move was made during the last moments of Windows 95 release in a haphazard manner, just to snub the competition from Netscape Navigator. In the following years Microsoft spent millions of dollars on Internet Explorer, with the aim to dominate the browser market. It succeeded to gain a huge share of over 95% for quite a few years. But recently open source browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have taken away a large share out of Microsoft's pie. These browsers are not only better in performance than IE, but offer better compatibility with W3C standards.

This latest report about the intelligence levels of IE users is expected to create a storm. The company behind the study, AptiQuant is a psychometric consulting company, that offers online tools to other companies to better assess their existing/potential employees based on their mental aptitude, skills, motivation and performance. It also has self-serving tools for individuals looking to identify their skills and reach their potential.

I wouldn't put much trust in that "survey" as they didn't factor in "lazy" browsers. ;) I qualified for Mensa many years ago ( but wouldn't join any group that would have me as a member.....except for MG's). I use FF because I'm too lazy to download and set up another browser. :-D:-D

I'd go back to using Camino if I could find my Tiger discs to reinstall after a HDD crash.

Meh...I think people use what they like as far as interface. I've tried Opera and honestly couldn't stand it. I think there's also laziness and disinterest in finding anything new from what they've always used. Most people don't consider their computers to be anything more than a way to do email and surf. They couldn't be bothered with exploring alternative browsers. I'm not sure it makes them unintelligent.

I've pretty much tried all of them ('cept Camino) and have stuck with Palemoon.

Now when you talk about Windows vs Mac and IQ..... LOL (joking, of course...sort of:-D)

Browsers are browsers and no matter what one its always going to be dumb, we just need a short time to get used to said browser, TBH I use them all and they are no different in reality, maybe a researcher can find a difference but they will be stretching!

No, I didn't trust that survey either but thought to post it here anyway in the hopes it would create a discussion. Got a brother overseas (IE8) who won't change to or add another browser although I've been nudging him a little. He's got very comfortable with. Over time a browser, once familiar with it, becomes like a pair of worn in slippers or pj's = comfortable = lazy? I tried Opera and Google Chrome and didn't like them. I love customizing, addons and that's why I love Fx and PM.

@Laura: I think you hit it spot on!

Oma.. I agree with you fully in your great post as its perfect as to give the opinion that browsers as two a penny and they all do the same thing but in a slightly different way at times and the mention of a nicely worn pair of slippers is a great analogy and one I would agree with fully.

I think that a browser is one we do feel conformable with and if its Fx or IE then great but its not a security blanket and will protect, you need other apps to deal with this.

There are some points that I would like to make about this *study* since it raises more questions than answers.

    1. The majority of internet users use IE, forced or not by their employers. When one can choose, many choose for an alternative. Therefore the conclusion could be that if one can choose and add or change to another browser, one automatically becomes more intelligent.

    2. The browser becomes/takes over the intelligence. It may be that IE is a more intelligent browser compared to others and therefore by using it one automatically remains *dumb*.

    3. Apple users are more intelligent than PC users. Safari scores higher?

    4. Make up your own mind. There are so many conclusions to be thought of based on this *study*.

PS: re #4: Most of us have already made up our minds and exchanged our points of view. ;)

I have tried Opera,Sea monkey,Safari,Maxthon,Firefox and IE but have settled on Pale moon which i find is just a little faster than FF and is user friendly (Thats short for even a dumbo like me can use it)

Having used FF and Chrome for a long time in Ubuntu, learning IE9 with a new Win7 laptop was a bit of a curve that I finally gave up on.

I tried Opera earlier this year for mobile sync ability but it was above my patience as well.

I doubt that. If you were that lazy, you wouldn't be Here. :-D

I began using Opera about 6 or 7 years ago not so much by choice as by necessity.
I had an old slow computer and research showed that Opera would be faster.
At first it seemed quirky and uncomfortable, but that's understandable having used only Internet Explorer and Netscape prior to that.
Now, of course, basically the opposite is true.

IMHO, not using an IE alternative (for Windows users) or one of the most up to date browsers, is Not a measure of intelligence.
It is mostly a matter of knowledge and experience and resistance to change.

Weirdly the BBC have this news again today, and its a fake story so it seems, the research did look dubious

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14389430

But the company at least gained free advertising, maybe Majorgeeks needs to have a survey and go viral with the results ;)
