We had a small 5.3 quake in June this year. I remember my 40" monitor shaking and the bookshelf covering the whole wall from floor to ceiling in my office rattling and a couple of books falling over. At first I thought I must be pissed but I hadn't had a drink all week and then when the dog started running around the house barking I knew something crazy was happening :confused When I heard on the radio there had been a 5.3 quake in Gippsland I was glad it wasn't a big one :)

AFAIK The Richter scale is logarithmic and I think for every extra 1.0 on the Richter scale the physical effect is 10 times greater so if there was a magnitude 5.0 shake then with a 6.0 shake the physical effect is 10 times stronger. This means the Canadian shake was over 100 times stronger than the Melbourne one .......Scary :eek

I am glad nobody was hurt -D

I found this link to the Melbourne one in June

We're pretty safe from earthquakes over here. The nearest fault to here is in the Selkirk Range or there-abouts.
We hear about the potential for damage that "The Big One" will do to the Lower Mainland when it occurs, But don't hear much about what may happen up there, hitest.
