internal speakers won't switch off

Hi,

It would appear that I have the opposite problem with my speakers. When I connect external speakers or a headset to my laptop (running Windows XP), I continue to get sound from the internal speakers in addition to the external speakers/headset (which basically defeats the purpose of having headphones). I have gone through all of the audio output options (Realtek HD audio output) in the "realtek HD sound effect manager) and in the sounds and audio devices (in the control panel). The results are very consistent - either I do not get any sound (when I've muted an option) through either the internal or the external speakers/headphones or I get the sound through both the internal and external speakers and headphones. Any ideas of how I can turn off the internal speakers when I have an external device plugged in?

I don't know if the Realtek HD Audio Manager has the same options in XP as in Vista, but have you chosen "Device Advanced Settings" and then "Mute the rear output device, when a front headphone is plugged in"?

 

Nope, unfortunately, I don't have anything that resembles "mute rear output device when front headsets plugged in". I do have a "mute" checkbox for front and rear individually but it's grayed out so I can't choose that option.

 

In the Realtek HD Audio Manager, un-select the "Front left and right" check box, in the Full-range Speakers section.
