    Heya everyone,

Recently, my roomate decided he would try and be an internet dictator and set security for our computers internet access. Security isn't really the word... its more like denial. He is blocking the internet to my computer from his computer, I expect it has something to do with our D-Link router.

We have Cable, and he can just shut off my internet when I am gaming, working, ect, from his computer. This is making me mad, to say the least, and I would really like to know how it is done so I can at least reverse it so I can work in peace.

There might be many ways this could be done, and it might be a hard problem (I'm sure he is messing with IPs)

    Thanks guys!

suggestion for after you fix it: unplug cables from his computer and hide them so he can't do it again. But that's after you fix it.

We need more details, like what the wire for the internet is hooked up to, where it goes, where it goes from there, etc.

he who has the router controls the connection.

Un plug your router,(power), cables, etc.
on your router is small hole size of paper clip insert paper clip,
this will reset your router to defalt settings.
you will have to do router setup again
there is not much to it. follow instructions in manual
Just set up basics set to stealth mode , disconnect wang form ping.
Your router and pc can be set to auto asign IPs

if you cant find or have manual you can down load from web site.

Can also elimanate router when roommate not around,
although with out router you will want to install a firewall on your pc
Admin password may have not been set or applyed just hit enter or continue I'd have to read d-link manual to remember?

Who died and left your roommate in charge?? Why would you put up with crap like this? Tell him/her to fix things or you'll download a few MB of hurt and install in on his body.

Wouldn't she just have to add her IP address to the routing table on the router? I think you should be able to hyperterminal into the router... but like dude said... I think you'd have to have the password to even get in.

    Alright thanks for the replies!

After checking his history, it showed and IP number. I tried entering it in, and it brought up a password/user name thing. So that is hows its done (I'm sure of this now) He enters his IP, something comes up, and he messes with something inside. I don't wanna reset my router if I can avoid it, is there any way to make my computer immune to this though?

Or is there a way I can do this from my computer?

Thanks again for the help :) If there is no way, I'll just reset the router.

Since it is Cable you can get your own account and be free.

You pretty much have 2 options if you want to continue using the connection through the router.

    1. Get his password and change the router settings. If you are really pissed at him, you can even make it refuse a connection to his computer.

    2. Reset the router and create a new password, this way YOU control the router and can get back at him and screw with his connection.

Some cable modems allow two simultaneous connections, ethernet and usb (my toshiba did). You'll loose a layer of security, but if you connect directly to the modem, your rommate can't mess with your connection - router wise.

Hey, your roomie has to sleep sometime, take a rather sturdy piece of wood or metal...

"If" you have a legit gripe, i.e. you pay half the ISP bill. Then I would ask nicely first, demand rather sternly second then failing that, get a new roommate or find an other place to live. I person like this will steal your last beer and not even think twice.

Tunnel through is a viable option however learning curve can be somewhat of a task and if he/she finds it, rather easy to terminate.

Direct connect to the ISP is a better option, screw the extra layer of router/nat protection and get a good software firewall and learn how to set it up properly, noobs always forget that last bit.

Take back the router, did you pay for half of the router? If no then patch in to the ISP directly. If yes, ask nicely first, demand sternly second then while he/she is gone some afternoon, say these words, "A vast me hardy, prepare to be boarded!" Reset the box according to the easy to find owners manual documents from the router's manufacturer’s web site, reset the user/pass and give yourself access again but don't cut him/her off, that's sinking to his/her level and you want to be above that when it comes to blows. Remember when confronted with a situation you can't back down from, duck first, then strike to kill.

Common sense dude, and don't forget karma.

Thanks for the replies.. seems resetting the router and setting my p/w would be the best option, but that direct ISP connection sounds great too. I have a firewall already (Norton, hate it but I can use it) so the protection isn't that big of an issue.

Is it a hassle to set in a new user name and pw? My roomie isn't a tech genious, he just stumbled upon a tutorial and fought his way through (I bet). I think quietly changing admin to me would be best, but I would also like to know how to connect to the ISP directly incase...

Are there any FAQ or Tutorials on how both of these procedures are done? Dont' wanna trouble someone to type it all up if it is complicated :)

And thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it.

    Thanks for the FAQ, Boz.

I am on Shaw Cable as an ISP, and we bought the cable modem from Rogers after we rented it for a while... I'm not sure what type/make it is. I'll check when I get home.

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn this stuff

DLink router did you say? Open IE and type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar and hit GO. The router controls should come up and if he/she didn't bother to reset the password then the usename should be Admin (and should already be there) and the password will be blank. At least that's the way mine works......

    Ummm....you may be right Kodo

Ummm....you may be right Kodo. I thought mine ended in .0.1, but I couldn't swear to it and I'm not home to check it right now so I'm not going to dispute it. Anyway Kibble- if one doesn't work, simply try the other.

    Linksys uses the .0.1
    DLink uses the .1.1

I would first approach the roommate and try to reason with him before going behind his back. He would at least have an opportunity to rectify the situation before you escalate it.

Yeah you're right about the IP. I THOUGHT we had a D-link, but its a Linksys (My bad) Its ok though, its not much different and I got it figured out. Pretty much the same deal with both routers.

Anyway, will resetting the router have any other ramifications than resetting the username/pw? Like loss of connectivity, ect. I'm about to just restart it but don't wanna make this a bigger mess. I've looked at the instruction manual as well, and getting it back online doesn't seem like a big problem if I did mess it up... but just incase :p

EDIT: What is firmware by the way? Does it download data to add-on hardware? Says I should upgrade my firmware but it can cause damage.

It would depend on what else you have opened in your forwarded ports area of the router setup. There are certain programs that require a connection to the internet and depending on what your roomate has opened, you may have to reconfigure those ports again. I would still speak to your roommate first if for no other reason to prevent further problems with your roommate. It has been my experience that this type of problem is one in which there is definitely more to the story than what is typically told. I would try to come to an amiable solution for the both of you.

Yes, resetting the unit will remove all the previous user entries. Your PPoE account information will be erased, any port forwarding or DMZ changes will also be erased. If you have routing tables, they will be erased too.

The Unit will simply revert back to the state you found it when you plulled it from the box.
