But only statistics on usage that relate to Ed's blog and not the internet browser usage as a whole though?

    More realistic stats http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=3

Their is no denying that Firefox is nibbling away at IEs stranglehold on browser usage, but seems to have stabilized a bit over the last few months, maybe all the geeky types who like Firefox or the ones thinking it will keep them safe from malware all have it now ;)

I think the majority of computer users don't know that they have a choice, most just use what ever is preloaded into there computer.

If more people would try firefox, customize it, theme it, make it there own they would love it.

I see the trend of IE slowly going down and FF slowly going up, and I like it.

So long as Corporate America and Bureaucratic Europe force IE on most folks it will remain in the majority.

How is IE "forced" on most folks? Because it comes preinstalled with Windows? You might be "forced" to accept it on your system, but unless you click the icon, you aren't "forced" to use it. Firefox is overrated; I don't use it, and those that think it protects you from all the evils of the internet are sadly misinformed. The "customizing" options of FF are a joke, 9/10ths of the add-ons are useless garbage, and most of those bog the browser down. And it is historically slow-loading, no matter how fast a system it is on. Fixing memory leaks has been the mantra with FF.

Ignorance is the primary user issue with computers; sadly, there's no patch for that.

I do believe that most pcs are actually in service with some business or government department. Try tellng your boss or IT department that you want to use a different browser from IE. IE is REQUIRED study in British schools, FF is not.

Who said the playing field was level?

Oh and BTW I use IE because most other people do so it is a kind of common currency or franca lingua. It is OK its just that I don't actually want to SEE the browser, just the web page.

It's really much the same with Windows. If I could go straight from BIOS to my applications I would be overjoyed. I used to be able to do this before IBM brought out their PC. Long live the Compucolor 2.

Can't speak for other countries, but I work for a government agency here in the states; no one has ever told me what I could do or couldn't do. And security is paramount where I work. I've had as many as five different browsers installed on my main computer at one time, and no issues were ever raised.

Something I should have mentioned before: I believe if there with as big a public relations push by Opera, K-Meleon, etc., as there has been with Firefox, their numbers would be on an upswing to some degree also. It's en vogue to bash Microsoft and its' products, but 90% of the people that do bash them have no idea how to use anything else. They tend to want to try alternative operating systems, but find it's like going from a lawn mower to a learjet.

A feisty response often hides an underlying disquiet about a subject.
I didn't say Microsoft was good or bad I said that most people most of the time have no choice but to use IE.
Go do a browser survey in EXXon HQ or the Pentagon or SHAPE or the Ministry of Silly Walks in London. Log on to a public pc anywhere in the EU.
I can guarantee the score will be IE mucho mucho : FF a handful
I also said this may not be a bad thing.

I didn't start this thread slagging off other users I just highlighted what I thought to be some interesting statistics that some users might like to see.

The only way I am forced to use IE is to use it to download FF your right.
Firefox is not targeted as much for virus' than IE that is a FACT-look at the market share-hackers aren't stupid.

Most people are lazy they won't bother to try something new, thats why IE is winning, as far as FF customizations causing slowdowns, I think your wrong. I am happy receiving my local weather above my task bar;previewing webpages before I go to them; having the definition of any word on a webpage at my beck and call;being able to use the internet like it was customized for me with the "stumble" add-on;being able to search with a mere click from a dozen or so search engines; having multiple themes to chose from, the list goes on, all this with little or no appreciable slowdown.

    my thoughts....

May not be targetted as much, but with its slow % gains on IE, it is in the sights of the malware writers FF2.0 http://secunia.com/product/12434/?task=advisories holes can be exploited ( where Mozilla comes off better is in their quicker fixes, so dont have to show me the IE7 stats I know them fairly well ) and they would be stupid not to target it! ;) Infostealer.Snifula is one trojan that directly was aimed at Firefox and the popularity of extentions, biggest saving grace for FF is no ActiveX.

However a bigger issue has arisen from the mis-communication that Firefox WILL be much safer than IE and save you from malware, while this is in part correct ( I say in part as no product is ever 100% safe ) the FACT is that the malware forum here is riddled with users with malware stating "Well I use Firefox as my browser" kinda wonder where they gained that notion from, but at end of day the weakest link in any security and not just internet security is the USER and until we get this crazy notion out of way and mention that the browser is only one part of the security equation then malware will be with us stronger than ever.

Here's a thought - what might happen if there was an equal number of people using ALL browsers? Where would the exploits be aimed then?

Not that that would ever happen, mind.

Personally I like firefox because I can tweak and modify it much more easily than IE (what with IE being closed source and all...). And the extensions that are out there may well be naff, the fact is I can make my own should I want to. That's the draw for me.

IE is getting better from a web designers point of view - but not a lot better. The nastiest browser in my experience to design for is Safari, as that has bizarre little quirks in it that I can't get around. But anyway, that's another story :)

    Hi there Goldfish,

You could of course turn it round and say that web designers are getting worse from a browser point of view!

I have know a Devon lady who runs Win98 with the most updated IE she can.
Unfortunately this is not enough to allow her to book on FLYbe, the main carrier from Exeter airport. I had a similar experience with Buzz before they were taken over. Their website script works fine with FF though.

This sloppy programming is surely disrespectful of customers.

i started to look for somthing else and found THE WORLD BROWSER it's like a super version of IE7 it's faster and just as stable with lots of plugins.
i found it on http://www.download3K.com/internet/browsers/best.html there are more than 120 browsers on the site and you can find links to write ups for each one

You know when you start a thread there is a great danger you might learn something.

    Thanks Bill, that impressive.
