Ok so here is my problem. I rebuilt a computer for my mother and gave it to her, by rebuilt I mean I added more ram and reformatted and installed windows 2000 on the machine. I have a wireless network in my house here, so I used my USB wireless network adapter to connect to the internet and download the service packs and what not. I give the computer to her and she cannot connect the the internet, or the router. The network card has the Yellow "?" symbol and I think it's the conflict between that and the wireless card.

The event log says error mrxsmb -" a duplicate name has been detected on the tcp network. the ip address of the machine that sent the message is in the data, use NBSTATH in a command window to see which name is in the conflict state."

I'm fairly sure that this needs to be resolved in the command prompt, but I don't know the commands to fix this problem. Any help would be great, thank you so much.

I found this info at Microsoft. Some of the info was written for WinNT but it should still apply to Win2000....
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/164016/en-us
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269239/en-us
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898064/en-us
The command is actually nbstat -n and you get to a command prompt by clicking Start > Run and typing cmd and then pressing Enter. But read the links first and see if they offer a concrete fix for you.

Here's another link, but it's fairly advanced stuff (TCP/IP repair and registry editing/deleting and the like). Be sure to read it all the way thru to see if it applies. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299451/en-us
Have you tried to simply remove the wireless USB drivers, then reboot, and re-install the on board drivers? That is, if the wireless USB adapter is no longer being used, and you're trying to use a wired connection via the built-in ethernet port or an add-on PCI ethernet card. You didn't explain it very clearly...

Has the network card ever been used in windows 2000? It might be a case of not having the proper driver to work with 2000.

My notebook is used both wired and wirelessly and does not show any yellow ! in device manager. You should be able to switch from one to the other. I think a driver is missing.
Right click the NIC and select properties. Post what you find there.
