internet connection malfunction

ive been having trouble with sp2. my pc automatically installed it and now im having trouble with my internet connection. i have a gateway pc and peoplepc for my provider. i have no problem getting online but it wont connect to any servers. it says that im registered with my usual 49.2 kbps but nothing will ever download. what do you think i should do?

 

It's probably the firewall settings.
Turn on file & printer sharing for starters.

 

While connected to the internet. If you open a DOS window type the command: ping www.google.com and if it states anything other than Replying from.... then i would suggest running a winsock fix http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4372 Hope this helps

 

From time to time my Earthlink homepage won't access either, even though my internet connection is logged on. What works for me is to click the MSN butterfly icon on my desktop, and for some reason that accesses MSN's homepage just fine (have to have a password to log in there). Then once I'm there, I just click the little house icon that takes me to Earthlink's homepage and it opens right up. As soon as it opens, I close MSN's homepage.


Hope this explains it okay. Don't know why mine only does that intermittently, but it's a pain!

 

guess what guys! first i want to thank everyone for replying that did. but i have to tell you the problem was something a little differant. i guess when i downloaded sp2 from microsoft i recieved a bunch of spyware and adware. i also got a couple trojans too. that was slowing me down. so i ran spybot search and destroy and ad-aware and that fixed all my problems. so now im back in the game. thanx guys!
