Internet Connection Problem

I just recently purchased a new computer to get away from my old emachine. However I am now having the problem of connecting to the internet.

I have Linkysis 4 Port Router which runs to my computer and a few others. The network card is a Builtin Dual Gigabyte Network LAN, Firewire 1394. Before on my emachine I could just plus the wire from the router straight into my computer and boom connected to the internet and now I plug it into the newer computer and I am having an error of saying I am not connected. When I go to Network connections under LAN or High Speed Internet it lists the connection but says it is connected even if the wire is unplugged.

I am confused; any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking one of two things
If your running software firewall, that may be blocking you, try turning off any firewall or Antivirus till your connection works
The router may not be set up correctly

I wounder if in Network Connections if your not confussing your 1394 connection with your Local area connection

Might also try another cable
