    Hi All

This is my first post.Hopefully will find a solution to the problem.

I am connected to internet through a wireless router and would like to know if i can use an Ethernet cable to allow access to my second laptop using ICS.

I have tried to set up the host pc for ICS but as soon as i try to enable ICS it gives an error message.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled.
A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address
that is required for automatic IP addressing.

Now i have found a solution which does not resolve the issue as i am using the wireless network as the primary network and want to use Ethernet as the
network for giving access to the second PC.

I hope somebody has got a solution for this

    THANKS

Hi JAVIZ and welcome to MGs.

If your router has ports in the back, then yes you can hook up a cable to the second computer for internet access.
Here is a view of the back of a linksys router with ports - http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3740141396B07
You may have to hit the View options button.

ICS is used when the first computer is acting as a "router" when there is no real router in your network set up. The real router is "sharing" the connection by assigning different IP addresses to the 2 different computers.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi lbmest

Thanks for the reply.I think i need to explain my problem once again.

I am trying to connect 2 laptops(A and B) to a network which is in a flat with no access to the router.I have been given the network key of the router to connect to the network.
Now laptop A has a wireless network adaptor installed and laptop B does not.
I am connecting A to the wireless network using Atheros network adaptor.
But in laptop B there is no wireless network adaptor.

What I am trying to do is to connect B to A through Ethernet cable so it can access the internet through A.
As explained by you ICS can work in only 1 way.Connect A to the router with Ethernet cable and B to A through wireless.

So I was just thinking if it is possible to do it the other way round.

Hoping to get a solution for this problem.

If I understand you correctly you are asking if two computers can be connected directly through their ethernet (RJ45) connectors without physical access to the router.
I'm afraid just plugging a cable between the two machines will not work.
Probably the easiest solution to your problem would be to get a USB or PCIMCIA wireless receiver.
They are fairly inexpensive and would enable laptop "B" to have a wireless connection to the router.

is but one example of what is available.

You do need to know what type of router is being used, however.
The example listed above will work with an 802.11 g or b router
This will allow you to connect with the two most popular wireless routers.

for your first laptop, just enable ICS to your wireless connection and then for your ethernet, give it an ip address of 192.168.0.1 with the default subnet mask but don't give it a default gateway, leaving it blank. for your another laptop, give it an ip address of 192.168.0.xx with default subnet mask and for the gateway it should be 192.168.0.1. connect the two computers through their ethernet adapters using RJ45 cable.
