Internet Explorer 7 loads very slowly

When I open ie 7 it takes 1-3 minutes to load the home page. Once it initially loads it operates at normal speed. If I open a new tab it takes 1-3 minutes to load as well. As long as I do not open any new tabs in ie 7 things run at a good speed. This problem has been happening about a month now. I upgraded to ie 7 approximately 10 months ago. Everything else runs normally and nothing has been detected by Norton. I am running ie 7 on xp home edition. I have norton antivirus/internet security 2006. I do not think I have any spyware/malware, but I do not know what else could be causing ie 7 to run so slow. I think I did everything in READ & RUN ME FIRST. I have attached the logs created by combofix, avg antispyware and MGtools. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. This issue is very frustrating.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
      [*]click the Make Writeable? button.
[*]click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    [B]Driver::[/B]
    [B]uvnjjmrjbeqg[/B]
    [B]mcugoqbkojyt[/B]
    [B]ldycypxnwrib[/B]
    [B]xcekxonnobwx[/B]
    [B]qsdktplsqqod[/B]
    [B]sgnnvuxk[/B]

    [B]File::[/B]
    [B]C:\hosts[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\1.hosts[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\{00000002-00000000-00000001-00001102-00000004-00581102}.BAK[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\uvnjjmrjbeqg.sys[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mcugoqbkojyt.sys[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ldycypxnwrib.sys[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\xcekxonnobwx.sys[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\qsdktplsqqod.sys[/B]
    [B]C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgnnvuxk.wqv[/B]

    [B]Registry::[/B]
    [B][-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1409082233-162531612-725345543-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{4DA4616D-7E6E-4FD9-A2D5-B6C535733E22}][/B]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

It's possible that your problems are not related to malware. Your logs are now clean after removing the items from my previous fix. It could just be Symantec slowing you down. Let's first remove a bunch of other unnecessary junk that you don't need starting up and go from there.

Uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in step 1 of the READ ME.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now delete the below folders if they still exist:

    C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert
    C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware
    C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware
    C:\Documents and Settings\Scott Kauffman\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com

Now reboot! Any change? If not, look into uninstall all of Symantec and see how things are working after doing that.

I performed the procedures suggested and unistalled all symantec products. There is no change in the issue. I am very confused that ie 7 still loads slow and I am not sure what else to do. Go you have any other suggestions?

I looked at all users internet options/security/restricted sits and there are 1000's of sites under each user's restriced sites. I started trying to delete these, but it would take hours there are so many. Could this have anything to do with my issue?

Do you still have Symantec uninstall? If so, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
I want to see if Symantec really uninstalled completely since it often does not.

This is normal when programs like Spybot (and there are many others) are used to protect you from accessing bad sites. Spybot's Immunize feature will add 1000's of known bad sites to your Restricted Zone (RZ). This should not be an issue. I have this on all of my PCs and none of them run slower due this; however I do have to say that as yet I have not checked to see if it causes any issue with IE7 since I did not put IE7 on any of my PCs since I don't particularly like IE7.

I will give you a quick solution to wipe out ALL info from both Restricted and Trusted Zones and then you can tell me if it resolves your problem.

Now please download DelDomainsand unzip it to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

Find the files from deldomains.zip on your Desktop and RightClick on the deldomains.inf file and select Install.

If the above did not solve your problem, I suggest that you "Immunize" with Spybot again to add all those bad sites back to your RZ.

I still have symantec unistalled, but like you indicated it might not be completely uninstalled. I have attached the logs requested. I tried clearing out the resticted sites with DelDomains with no improvement so I "immunized" woth spybot again.

Yes as typically seen it did not all go away. I'm not sure if this really you reason for the slow loading of new tabs or not so let's finish removing Symantec and if it does not, I will give you a few other steps to continue on to see if they help.

Let's stop and disable the Symantec service still running.

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Core LC
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.

Now let's remove a Symantec entry from your Uninstall Programs list.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now just for the heck of it, also run this: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Then reboot and after reboot make sure the below folder no longer exists:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\Documents and Settings\Scott Kauffman\Local Settings\Temp

Back in message # 4 I asked you to fix the below line. Did you miss this? Do it now.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Any change to your problem? If not, then continue on one by one thru the below but do not reinstall Symantec yet if you were planning on doing that.

Note: It is important that you do not skip the reboots where requested below.
    • Uninstall Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, and reboot. Any change? If not, just continue.
    • Uninstall Ad-Aware 2007, and reboot. Any change? If not, just continue.
    • Uninstall AVG Anti-Spyware, and reboot. Any change? If not, just continue.
    • Try running IE7 without add-ons by doing the below:
      • Right click IE icon on desktop and select Start without add-ons or
      • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
If none of the above change anything for you, then you may just be experiencing what many people claim to be a problem and that is the IE7 is just signifcantly slower than IE6.

Also if none of the above helped, you need to reinstall your Symantec AV now and and Google Toolbar if your really need it. Then also work thru the below to cleanup what we have done and to finish getting you properly protected.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank You!! After I removed the google toobar the normal speed was back. I will reinstall symantec and perform the 13 steps you have listed at the bottom of your post tomorrow. I am surprised that reomving the google toolbar restored the speed because it has been installed since I downloaded ie 7 8 or so months ago and only rencently, last two months, has ie 7 started running slow. I guess it could be a combination of other things that occured and the toolbar which caused the slowed down.

You're welcome. Software can interact in strange ways. Also remember updates for software can occur all the time too and sometime the update can cause issues. This even happens with various Microsoft updates.
