Internet Explorer - cant download

Earlier today I was downloading what I thought was an excel template and downloaded a virus. After finally getting my computer to where it will connect to the internet, I can't download anything from your site to scan my computer. When I click to download a program to scan my computer, it says the download will begin in a couple of seconds nothing happens, so I click the link provided if it doesn't begin to download and again nothing happens. Any ideas?

I have Windows XP Professional and Internet XP8

Try an online scanner http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Get a friend to download the program you want, put it on a USB stick and put it on your computer from the stick.
I'd recommend Malwarebytes.
