Internet Explorer History Problems

Using "Tools/Internet Options/Clear History" doesn't reliably clear the history display. Sometimes takes several tries and computer restarts to clear the history. Even stranger, the IE history displays documents that I've opened
off line from "My Documents"* which have nothing to do with sites visited online!! I've never seen this previously.

Any hints would be appreciated.

*e.g.: MS Word document "ACTION ITEMS 13 JULY '04.doc" created
off line in "My Documents" appears as an IE history item.

alot of opened files ( eg. MS word, IE etc ) are stored in recently open files or the index.dats, My personal preference is to have the history folder in IE > Tools > Options set to 0 as I really only need the sessions history to be kept once I finished with IE they are wiped.

one program to try is CrapCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html as this will clean all history, Recent files and URLs and cookies etc ... just take a while to look at all the options and only leave ticked the things you wish to have removed as this is a fairly powerfull cleaning app.

Thanks for the tip. I may try "Crapcleaner"; however, I keep IE history kept
at "0" days but still have the problem. After clicking "Clear History", the garbage still stays in the History folder. I'm afraid that "Crapcleaner" might
clear the recently-visited garbage but that the problem will recur. I can
sometimes get it cleaned after numerous tries/restarts, but then the inability to clear history returns.

Nice post Bazza, that Empty Temp app is a nice one and should do what danielakelly wants in removing the reciently used files/docs.
