I'm working on a friend's computer. It's got Bellsouth dialup and runs XP home. Everytime I open IE, a window pops up that says Wininstall [hmm....] in the title bar (blue bar at the top of the screen). I can't see any sites at all, I get a this page can not be displayed screen. Is it some kind of virus? Or worse maybe? How do I fix it?

Wininstall is a program they have installed, don't know a lot about it. Check in Startup and see if it is listed, if so, disable and see if that stops the pop-up.

Why are you working on the computer, what problems were they having?

My problem seems to be very simulier with IE, since this morning everytime i try to open the web browser i get this in my adress bar "http:///" it seems to keep refreshing itself every few seconds and doesnt allow me to do anything through IE. When i check the internet options it shows this as the current web address "res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm". The problem seems to be related to Internet Explorer because i can surf the web through Ares (file sharing prog) and everything is fine. I have had this problem ever since i started my pc this morning, the pc was off all night and was 100% fine when i shut down the night before.
I've tryed everything i can think of including many things i've read on this site.
ive ran virus scans, spyware scans, updated windows files, and ran CCleaner
    nothing has helped.
Can someone here please please help me out.

also im very sorry for the bad spelling/grammer ;\

    loc,

You need to start your own thread on this. We don't know what Operating System and current updates you have.

This can probably be solved with a Winsock repair. But we don't know what procedure or program to have you try without certain info.....and it does get confusing trying to help two different people on the same thread.

You want our members to concentrate on your problem. So start a thread and the geeks will get this sorted out for you. :)

Sorry I didn't reply last night, got busy watching a football game.

It was running really slow and the internet connection wasn't doing anything. I ran Adaware and found a lot of junk, 147 hits. Just running that helped things move faster. I ran Disk Cleanup and got rid of more junk, 57 MB's.

Now the computer is running faster but the internet connection is still messed up. I can connect through his dialup but I can't get any websites through IE.

    Try this:

    1. Quit all programs that are running.

    2. Click Start, and then click Run.

    3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.

    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):

    • Shdocvw.dll
    • Msjava.dll
    • Actxprxy.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Mshtml.dll
    • Browseui.dll
    • Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

What ever happened with the Wininstall thing? Good luck and let us know.

    Thanks for your help.

I looked for Wininstall in the Startup, didn't find it but did find a lot of other .exe's and other programs including one line that didn't have any name at all...it just showed up as a blank line.

I'm running the list of dll's you gave me now, thanks.

I'll let you know what happened with them now.

  8. Rollin

    Rollin Private E-2

    Ok, latest update.

I was able to find Wininstall.html and delete it, that seemed to get rid of that problem. It started to give me the "This page can not be displayed" page.

I've run the list of dll's you suggested. After urlmon.dll the homepage began to come up but stopped after the first few lines of text and no jpegs, just red x's where they should appear. As I ran the rest of the list, I got error messages saying that Msjava.dll and Brownseui.dll couldn't be found.

Also during all this, I get a virus alert from Norton 2003 (he hasn't updated in 2 years, I'm trying to get where I can do that for him too) that says I have Bloodhound.w32.EP virus in 5.tmp.ex and a second warning that it is in 8.tmp.exe

Any ideas? Thanks for your help

    Rollin,

Try and redo Browseui.dll you spelled it wrong in your post. Try Msjava.dll again just to be sure.

See if you have Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM) on the computer, Search the computer for the file msjava.dll. It should be located in either the Windows\System32 or the Winnt\System32 directory.

Also, ask your friend if they want to keep Norton's, have they renewed the subscription? It could be causing some of your problems, we have several free anti-virus programs here at MG's that are as good or better than Norton's.

Is there a firewall installed on the computer? Do you have the XP cd?

Ran Browseui.dll and it ran successfully.

msjava.dll and MSJVM (Java Virtual machine) are missing.

I can get rid of Norton and put anything you recommend.

    Rollin,

Disable the Norton's anti-virus and a firewall if they have one installed. Try to access a safe site like Major Geeks and see what happens. If that doesn't work, use the Rnav2003.exe removal utility below. I can't see that is doing them much good with no updates or subscription pending and as I mentioned before we can solve the anti-virus and firewall problem.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

Sorry for the delay but didn't want to leave you hanging. I got some people here from florida watching the game and trying to locate something here on MG's site and can't find it.

Still looking, I will be on and off so don't get discouraged. :)

just to jump in half way, could you give me a quick update as to where you are in relation to whats comming up on screen when you try a webpage is it still "page not found" or do you now get something if so what?

also as Norton hasnt been updated for 2yrs, has XP also been left without updates... what Service Pack is he upto? ( you can find this out by right clicking My Computer > Properties and it will be the bottom line under the heading System )

One thing I would also suggest at this point is to backup everything he/you feel is important data eg. IE Favorites, any Documents, Files, Downloads, Email Address Book just about anything you couldnt do with out as the very last resort maybe a re-install :(

    Rollin Private E-2

He's still on Service Pack 1. I now get a little bit of the home page, first few lines of dellnet.com but no pictures. It loads very slow to get that much, but I think that is because of the slow dialup...56K modem only gets up to 26.4

I've got a few things to finish here this morning, but I'll get to work on it in about 12 probably. I'll start backing stuff up, he's told me that there's only a few things he really wants backed up.

    Thanks for your help.

Great always worth backing up as even tho we will attempt to get his PC working, with the possible amount of virii and other nastys he's contracted it maybe that the easy option would be to clean install as a final option.

A few simple things I would start with are...

    1. Deleted the Temporary Internet Folder and Cookies
    2. Delete the contents of the Temp Folder at this location C:\WINDOWS\Temp also while your near in the windows folder delete the contents of the Prefetch Folder here C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
    3. Turn off System Restore ( this can harbour Virii/Trojans and re-install them when you thing you have removed them ) instructions here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=31668 once re-booted run your AntiVirus and spyware software again, if you get a clean bill of heath turn it back on again.
    4. Open a Command Window ( Start > Programs > Command Prompt ) and type or cut and paste this ipconfig /flushdns

    Then try the internet again.

    --------
as a side note it would also be worthwile downloading these apps for use now some wont clear up the problem but will help stop new problems emerging.

SpywareBlaster ( doesnt clean spyware but helps stop it being installed in the first place )
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2859

Spybot Search & Destroy ( will help mop up the things Ad-Aware "may" miss )
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471

another thing to read through and use some of the advice is this http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 NOW I know some parts of it you wont be able to follow as they need access to internet pages but well worth a read.

    Ok, update time.

I got rid of Norton this morning. I installed AVG anti-virus software on recommendation of a few friends, also found it here and it seemed popular. I've done the updates on the problem computer and it downloaded fine and even a little faster (It has bellsouth accelerator that is working now). I'm maybe halfway through a scan and have found 12 different viruses including backdoors, worms, sasser, trojan..and stuff I've never heard of.

Its a complementry addition to your antivirus program and what it hunts for is Trojans, Dialers and Keyloggers amongst other things that most AVs dont check for, this program can be run along side your AntiVirus program with no problems.

sounds like things are moving forward ;)

Just finished running AVG scan and I can't believe how much it found. AVG found 822 infected files. There were 742 infected files just in the System32 folder.

WOO HOO!!!! I'm posting this from the bad computer. I can get on the internet with it now!

I am running Asquared right now, just to be sure.

I'll add spybot and Spyware blaster too.

After I connect to Bellsouth I get a pop up for qdentica.com/loud.html....is that just a popup that will go away after I get rid of the spyware?

Thanks for all of your help.

Ok, back on the other computer.

    2 questions.

    1. About 5 minutes after I connected, I'd gone to a couple of sites and the home page. I started getting a bunch of AVG hits for a Sasser virus. Should I try to get a firewall? Would it help?

    2. I still get red X's instead of jpegs and other images, I'm only seeing text. Any idea why?

  23. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

    Kick Ass :)

Yes a firewall would really help alot as it not only stops incomming traffic but alerts you to anything that want outgoing access, which can be trojans.

2 good firewalls are Zone Alarm and Sygate

    Sygate
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3356.html

    Zone Alarm
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download388.html

    Both FREE.. so bonus!

also I would pay a visit to Microsoft Security site as it has info on which updates you need http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx just look under Recient Incidents and run all the tests and download any patches that are needed.

once all this is done it maybe worth a trip to MS update and get SP2... bear in mind tho SP2 has been know to not play ball with some PC setups wheras some its ok with..

    Windows Update
    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Finally well done in getting your friends PC to a working state again :)

    Rollin,

Sounds like you made some progress. All good advice from Halo (as usual) and he gave you some great free programs to install that will help a lot.

Halo did mention in his post at the very first that you back-up anything important or you might want to keep. On a system that unstable I should have suggested you do that, I didn't think of it and I apologize.

Did you ever check again on msjava.dll ?

Did you turn off System Restore? before running AVG as if any virii are infecting SR they will be put back at bootup because the system things its missing files ( sneeky virii )

I also thing they are hitting you hard on that PC as its not fully patched as yet with MS updates.

if you are still getting page not found errors try this it will fix Winsock which can become damaged when removing spyware etc etc http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

It worked Thursday night, I unhooked it for Friday and Saturday and stored it, hooked it back up today and IE won't work now.

Everything works except IE. I can connect through Bellsouth dialup with no problem, then I click IE and it tries to load but I get the "This page could not be displayed" and at the bottom it says it could not find the server.

I tried to update IE and Windows but couldn't get the page you linked below to work.

When you get the page cannot be displayed message you should check to see if it is a hijacker. Right click on the area that says page cannot be displayed and go to view source.. okay.

Other than that I see that no one suggested dumping temporary objects.
Go to Tools->Internet Options-> General-> Settings->View Objects-> then right click and remove objects in the folder.

This will remove any temporary objects from internet explorer which can be re-downloaded if you need them when visiting sites. (they work alot like cookies or temporary internet files)

@decter... well that comment adds a great deal in solving the question posed, if only everything in life was as simple as installing Firefox and TBH, I dont think its quicker, page rendering is slower than Opera or IE for me but maybe with the MaxCache tweaks I added earlier it may speed it up more...

    -----------

Rollin ... have you been back over some of the things we did earlier like virus checks ( turning off system restore ) anti spyware checks, dumping temp internet files etc ... as these got you to a working IE, once you have a working IE window you will need to either get all of the critical MS updates it lists for you and dont go SP2 or as you have backups of all important stuff bite the bullet and go for SP2 ( you pc will need to be spyware free for a sucessful SP2 install ) as it has all the relevent updates in one big package, then you will only have a few post SP2 updates to get.

n.b some SP2 installs go OK some dont go so well

As this issue has gone on for over a week or so by this time I would even on my own pc, be looking at a re-install so maybe something to consider soon?

I've had some problems too with the java machine, bloody MS... Especially in compination with SP2... Shouldn't have used it in the first place, but I was in a hurry... Sun Java is imo very nice and reliable, haven't had any problems with it!

For the second time? Or is this still the first time around?

Stop it, and start from top again. What it hasn't finished in 24 hours it will never finish.

You probably did this... But it's what I can think of right now. Did you format before install? Don't do the quick format, it is worth the extra seconds the slower takes. I once had problems with a pc because of doing a quick format. (ok, that was the 15th time I formatted that drive! I'll have to get one of those T-shirts saying: I will not fix your computer, no matter how close a friend you are, if it is more than 4 years old.....And why don't people keep drivers.....rant over. ;) )

Rollin... you will need to do what Solange said above and start all over again, XP gives you the option to format do that and as she said not the quick one, do the full format ......... I would as XP allows you to do this easily, delete the partition and make a new one then full format.

  50. Solange

    Solange Sergeant Major

Are you sure it is the modem that is the problem?

I've struggled with both problematic modems, and problematic Internet Providers, that is why I'm asking...

Do you get a dial out tone? can you hear if the modem is trying to connect to the internet? If you can hear that, it is the internet options you need to change.

To see if the drivers are working, rightclick "my computer" and select "properties". Select the Hardware tab, and go to "Device Manager". Do you see any yellow question marks? If there is a yellow question mark on the modem, you can try updating the drivers from there, rightclick the item that gives you the question mark, and a wizard will appear. If you have the drivers to the modem, follow the steps through the wizard. Generally, do not let the wizard look automatically, designate the path to where you have the drivers (on floppy or cd), that usually works better.

If you don't have any question marks, it is probably your settings with password and number to ISP that is the problem, but try this first! :)
