Ok, I'm just about ready to declare the friend's computer dead.

I ran Modem helper today, it said that there were problems between XP and the driver and it would reinstall the driver. As it was installing the driver it kept asking for the disk that was already in the drive. It never finished.

I also had a new problem today. I went to shut down the computer and it took about 30 minutes to shut down.

    Is it dead yet????

    Definetely not dead yet.

First, try to download the latest drivers from the internet for the modem, there could be fixes for compatability with XP that aren't on the drivers on the disk. Use another computer to do the download, and store the drivers on a floppy that you can then use on the troublesam computer. To find drivers, go to the manufacturer of the modem and look for drivers or downloads. Or run a google search with the name of the modem, brand, model etc and the words "driver" or "drivers" and "download".

If this doesn't work, this could very well be because the install was interrupted. I'm afraid to say that you may have to start over. :( But it is probably worth it, as this computer worked with XP before, it should again! Don't take my word only for that though, there may be ways to fix this this without reinstalling, that I can't think of!

That is a common error that it hangs at 32 minutes left. I had it happen before but i dont remember what the cure was. Maybe google has an answer.

Might want to make sure your xp disc is not scratched or dirty, or try to use a different xp disc.

Ok, all I can find for the name of the modem is "PCI modem".

I have searched Dell's website to look at their drivers and I have found 3 modem drivers that all say they are PCI modems, anybody know which one is the right one for a Dell Dimension 2400? The choices are Conexant, Axus, and one other one that doesn't list a brand name.

Gday to Rollin and the Lads

Just wanted to say Rollin that I have had the exact same problems as you have had on your mates Dell ship anchor. I've been fixing my mates laptop (Presario 2500) and it was so riddled with viruses and spyware that it was running like the 486sx that the old man still uses at home for his strip poker. After removing most of the spyware, I attempted to install SP2 (he uses XP Home) and after many attempts, disconnections and dropouts that were starkingly similar to what you described, I finally downloaded it. However once downloaded and installed I got the dreaded "c:windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror", whenever I connected to the net. I did a google search and I reckon there must be thousands of people who are having exactly the same problem. Anyways Ive been going through all of them and I swear I have tried everything (including the extremely useful information that you and your buddies have been posting on this thread) and I have finally given up. Im just about to do a fresh Install as I think that is the only solution. Ive got an MCP for NT4.0, and IIS but compared to those infamous blue screen errors, this spyware crap really takes the cake. My only advice to your mate is ...Dont go to Porn sites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway can you let me know how you went with it. Thanks again to everyone that has contributed to this thread. Great Help!

    Shane

    Mainstream,

So far I've just followed the suggestions that I've got here. I ran out of ideas pretty quick, but this is a great place to get help.

I went searching too found 4 for the 2400
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...DIM_PNT_P4_CEL_2400&category=20&os=WW1&osl=EN

to try find out what one of those it is try one of these methods

    1. Open up the casse and look for any model name & numbers

    2. Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager and got down the list and look for the Modem

    3. Install Everest http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 and look under Network or Devices PCI for a modem ( I havnt got a modem in my PC anymore so the location maybe different )

Installed Everest, found out it was a Broadcom V.90 56K modem. I found the driver and installed it. When I go into Device Manager there is still a ! next to PCI modem.

I've had that problem with a modem, a long time ago, but that was on win 98. The only thing I can suggest is to try to update the drivers, you access that through double clicking the modem in the device manager. That is how I solved my problem, I just updated, uninstalled, reinstalled... and suddenly it worked...

I hope someone else has brighter ideas though, modems isn't something I know too much about... :)

you may need to open up and look for some model numbers on the card... as well as an FCC ID number... post that and I maybe able to track the card and drivers down.

Found the right driver. Halfway through installation it says that it's missing a file, looks like a temp file named after the computer owner.

I may not have to worry about working on it too much longer, he's coming to pick it up Saturday afternoon...think he's just decided to get a new one. If he does get a new one I WILL make sure that he has antivirus and spyware protection, maybe even a good firewall. I would like to try to figure it out though, it's a challenge now and I don't want to give up on it.

    Do this:

    start > run > cmd.exe
    click 'ok'
    at the command prompt, type:

    sfc /scannow
    press 'enter'

Its important you put that space in there :)

got this from previous thread from Adrynalyne

  17. Rollin

    Rollin Private E-2

    Ok, tried sfc /scannow

I think it would have worked too, but all I have is the guy's disk to reinstall XP instead of a XP home edition disk. It kept kicking the disk back out when it tried to copy files.

  18. Solange

    Solange Sergeant Major

Dammit, this should work. If it's worked before then it should work again! Don't give up on it! :)

Is that system restore disks, not the original XP home disk you have? Sorry if you've already said that, I might have missed it.

Imo, a good firewall is almost more important than antivirus, because the firewall will prevent most stuff from getting into the computer in the first place! And the free versions you can get online are really good!

Have you tried physically taking the modem out of the machine and then putting it back in. XP should auto detect it and reinstall the driver.

  20. Rollin

    Rollin Private E-2

I have the reinstallation disks and not the original XP disk.

I haven't tried to open the tower yet, I have very little knowledge of what I'm doing there so I wanted to avoid it. I will see what I can do though.
I will be better at the internal hardware stuff soon though, I start an A+ Net+ certification class January 19th.

what file did it say was missing.... 56k modems if not picked up by XP on install are a pain in the ass to troubleshoot... its all about getting the full driver package and not just one of the many updates out there as it seems soemthimes a crucial file is missing.

on a side note... I've been toying with the idea of doing an A+ in both Hardware & Software

  22. Rollin

    Rollin Private E-2

I'll run it again to find out for sure, I know it's a long name in a temp directory named after the owner of the computer.

WOO HOO!!!! I got the driver to install finally. It finally said that it was missing BCMSM168.dll and gave me a chance to browse for it. I found it in a folder inside a folder in the modem driver folder. Now the modem dials, it gets a busy signal....but I think I can fix that with a different access number from bellsouth.

I'll post again tonight or in the morning to let y'all know what happens next, I'm just happy the modem dialed

    WOO HOO!!!! IE WORKS!!!!

Ok, here's what I had to do since my last post.

I found a new bellsouth number. Connection worked, but IE didn't
I downloaded new AVG updates, IE still didn't work
I ran all the regsrvr steps that somebody posted below weeks ago, IE still didn't work
I tried to run Windows updates and IE didn't work so it wouldn't let me.

I went to internet options -> connections -> settings just to see what I could see. I uncheck Proxy settings and IE WORKS!

I'm running Windows Updates now, but I might wait and do that in the morning.

    Matacumbie,

Think you're right. Somebody already gave me an old laptop they found. I'm trying to decide if I'm bored enough to mess with it, I probably will though but I start an A+ prep class next week so I don't know if I'll have time.
