    Re: Internet Explorer problem

I am having this same problem. I have windows XP, this doesn't happen on every identity. I can create a new identity and IE will work fine. When it doesn't work it displays a "Page can not be displayed" page. The connection is dial-up, and it shows I'm connected at 49k, but I can't open any pages. I have Earthlink, no Norton anti-virus, I have AVG anti-virus.
Thanks in Advance for any suggestions,
    Amy :~D

    Re: Internet Explorer problem

    Welcome to MG's Amy. :)

I split your thread off from the other one. It's always a good idea to start your own thread as you really cannot be having the same problem as someone else. No two computers are the same as far as installed software, hardware used, configuration, etc. so each issue is unique therefore each problem while it may seem the same, is not so needs to be addressed as a separate issue.:)

Internet explorer displays a "Page can not be displayed" page on every page I go to, it won't open anything. I have windows XP, this doesn't happen on every identity. I can create a new identity and IE will work fine for a while then do it again. The connection is dial-up, and it shows I'm connected at 49k, but I can't open any pages. I have Earthlink, no Norton anti-virus, I have AVG anti-virus. No viruses have shown up, I have run "AdAware" on all identities, it doesn't help.
    My computer is Intel(R) , Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz,
3.05GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 56K modem dial-up no access to DSL or Cable.
Thanks in Advance for any suggestions,
    Amy :~D

    Merged threads together.

Amy, please stay in one thread to avoid confusion. If you have more information to add or if your thread drops off the page without any replies after a reasonable period of time just click on the "post reply" button and bump your thread back up. When one or more of our knowledgeable members is able to stop in and can help they will but it's also important that you follow up on your thread so it doesn't fall to far back (several pages) so they don't see it at all. :)

    Hope this helps!:)

    Hi Amy,

For a start, see if the steps below help.

    Clean Up Internet Explorer
    1. Click Tools.
    The Internet Options window appears.

    2. Under the General tab, click Delete Cookies.
    The Delete Cookies window appears.

    3. Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder? appears.

    4. Click OK.
This may take several minutes to complete.

    5. After deleting the cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder, click Delete Files.
    The Delete Files window appears.

    6. Click Ok to Delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files Folder?.
This may take several minutes to complete.

    7. Click Clear History.
A new Internet Options window appears.

    8. When asked Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?, click Yes.
This may take several minutes to complete.

    Reset Internet Explorer Settings

    1. Under the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings.
The Reset Web Settings window appears.

    2. Click to remove the checkmark from the box titled Also reset my home page.

    3. Click Yes.
Once complete, the Reset Web Setting window appears.

    4. Click Ok to complete the resetting process.

    5. Click Ok to close out the Internet Options window.

    6. Close out your current Internet page, and open a new one by double clicking the Internet Explorer icon. Try the web pages now.

If that does not solve the problem, try the steps below.

    1. Click Start, click Run, and then type each of the following commands. Press ENTER after you type each command.

    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 msjava.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll

    2. Test to see if the problem is resolved. Let us know

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the suggestions, I tried it all, nothing worked. I ran all of the regsvr32 that you suggested and they all succeeded, but IE still won't open any pages. :(
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Amy :~D

Have you run through a malware check/removal process, as a precautionary? Would be good to be able to rule that out as a source of the problem.

Do other browsers work fine when IE is not working? Install another browser like firefox or opera. When IE gives you a page not found error, open up the other browser and try to access the same page.

Well, I downloaded Advanced Browser, which I LOVE so far, but it didn't fix my problem. I went to the identity that the IE wouldn't open a page on, opened Advanced Browser, and it showed the same "Can't find webpage" message as IE. It won't open any pages at all.
Any further suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Amy :~D

I had this same prob with XP. I ended up having to turn off my firewall to go anywhere with IE...... Its worth a shot right?!

I finally fixed it!:D Here's what I did (in case anyone else has this problem)
    I disabled the proxy settings.

To disable proxy settings in IE:

    1. Open IE

    2. on the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options."

    3. on the "Connections" tab, select your connection in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings" list, and then click "Settings.

    4. Uncheck th ebox next to "Use a proxy server", then click OK

    5. On the "Connections" tab, click "LAN Settings"

    6. Uncheck the box next to "Use a proxy server for you LAN", then click OK.
    7. Click OK again to close the "Internet Options" screen.

I had this problem last year and didn't realize I could create a new identity to circumvent it and ended up paying $200 to have my computer wiped out and reinstalled (major hassle). This year I figured out I could make a new identity and it would let me browse the net on my new ID, so I have had time to research and try to figure out what to do without the $$$ or the hassle.:)
    Thanks for the help everyone!
