Internet Explorer wrong sites

    Here's what WAS happening:
On Internet Explorer, if I Googled a word, and clicked on a link, sometimes there was a long pause, and a page other than the one I clicked appeared. Firefox would always crash if I did a search from Google, but not from Altavista.com. All installable files would lock up Windows Explorer when I tried to install them. AVG would not update. A process called OSE.exe would use half my CPU if I ran any Office products. Processes called iexplore.exe would keep running after I closed Internet Explorer, until several were running at once, using all remaining CPU cycles.

I went through the Read Me steps. Since SUPERAntiSpyware was already installed, I ran that a few times. I ran Avenger. I never got Anti-Malware to run more than a few seconds. ComboFix was not available. I ran the rest and here is where things stand now:
    1) Internet Explorer displays the wrong pages, but iexplore.exe goes away when it should.
    2) AVG will not update, stating "Update failed. Access is forbidden by the server."
    3) Anti-Malware (running as mb.exe) closes after a few seconds.

I have Windows XP Professional 2002 with Service Pack 3.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2ssv.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ramdmm - ramdmm.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\ed.isenberg\Local Settings\Temp

Now let's run the below to check for a rootkit.
    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please attach this log to your next reply.
    • Reboot after running the TDSSKiller program
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • the full log from TDSSKiller
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I ran the programs and attached the logs (although TDSSKiller's log seems to be inside MGlogs.zip).

When I went to the TDSSKiller link gave, none of the images would display and no download was available. The website looked fine on another computer, so I downloaded it there.

While running MGTools, when it was zipping hijackthis.log, an application error window appeared saying:
    ProcessDll.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). I clicked OK and the cmd window complained that it could not find procdll.txt on the desktop.
After more zipping, MGTools stopped normally.

This was explain in the Using MGtools link given in the READ & RUN ME. You do not have the .NET Framework software installed anymore ( you did back in June since an old log inside MGlogs.zip shows that you did so you must have uninstalled it ).

Your logs are clean. You did not say whether you were still having problems. If you are, do they occur with both IE and FireFox?

Thanks for your help. Here's how things stand on my computer.
    1) Internet Explorer occasionally displays the wrong pages after a Google search.
    2) AVG will not update, stating "Update failed. Access is forbidden by the server."
    3) Anti-Malware (running as mb.exe) closes after a few seconds.
    4) The TDSSKiller link looks wrong in IE; the page is filled with text and empty image boxes, and all links go back to the same page. The page looks OK on my other computers.
    5) Firefox doesn't display the wrong page after a Google search, it just crashes.

Since ComboFix has been back for awhile now, please download and run ComboFix per the instructions in the READ & RUN ME.

Then run this Running GMER to detect rootkits

Now attach the logs from ComboFix and GMER.

Also tell me if anything has changed.

Sorry for the delayed reply; I got laid off from the job where I used that computer, and then recently got rehired.

Here's what happened shortly before the layoff: the Administrator had set up my computer to log me off after 15 minutes of inactivity. I recall that some of the software (GMER perhaps?) ran so long that I had to set a timer and smack my spacebar every 14 minutes to keep the software running. I was using another computer all day. After an entire day of this it still hadn't finished running, so I gave up since I was about to leave the job anyway. Before the Admin could look at it, he also took another job.

I later discovered that after an automatic Microsoft update time in January 2010, things just started working OK on that computer.

Since that time I've had a similar problem on another computer, and by carefully following the instructions on this website I was able to clear up the problem. Thanks! You guys are the greatest!

    You're welcome.

If you have followed the cleaning procedure and do not require any help then you should follow our final instructions below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
