I have IE 8 on a laptop and everytime I open IE I get the same old :crap
Its a white bar which says, "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. Click here to change your security settings..."
I went online and it appears this is a problematic part of IE 8?????
If this is due to IE 8 then I don't want IE 8.. it is a PIA...

How do I uninstall this and reinstall a browser that works?

I've uninstalled IE 8 and reverted to IE 7. Unfortunately now I am stuck on the :

thanks for choosing internet explorer 7

screen where I am supposed to choose my search providers, but choosing and clicking the 'save your settings' button does nothing and gets an error 153 warning.

I'm really beginning to hate it when they change things because it NEVER works right...

Not happy with Microsoft at all... :(

Try repairing IE7 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Failing that, reset the security settings to the defaults in Control Panel > Internet options.

Please let me say here, I can never express how much I appreciate all the help I've been given on MG.

I've had some viruses and malware in the past and have used various tools to rid myself of them.

But this time if it is a bug, it is kicking my ***....

I could never get IE 8 to work correctly, even with technet assistance and MS fix its, so I revereted to IE7, which I used before on this machine of 4 others and never had problems.

I have xp on everything btw... I routinely have avast and malwarebytes installed on each and every week or so run superantispyware and others.

Oh yea, Internet Options disappeared and according to the prompt that pops up it says the system did it?????

If I had recovery cds or software cds I'd strip this thing and reinstall...

I've been trying to run windows fix its and help but to no avail.

Also, now I cannot log into MG or download anything because, although my mouse pad and pointer works, when I place it in the log in box, the point disappears and I can't type anything...

Sorry if my notes are confusing, but this is the 3rd day and night I've been messing with this problem...

    Update:

Attached is the hijack this log.

I also ran fix its from MS to reset IE to its original settings and to reset the security options in Internet Options.

    Both failed.

I did get a fix it to run for the 'blank page' problem, but that doesn't seem to have fixed anything.

Oh yea, ran updates earlier using a little cut and paste trickery and got five new security updates.

I appear to be well beyond my computer skill level on this one and microsoft fix its, support and forums is no help.

    Update to ya'll...
I re-installed IE8 and it appears, albeit slowly but unsurely I am getting it set up to work as I want.
I still have that annoying redirect to Microsoft and all the associated problems, but at least it is working. I eventually will figure out, i.e. have someone tell me how to stop all of MS's stupid redirects to their welcome pages and crap which doesn't work anyway.
BTW... it appears Microsoft admits (thru postings I have read by reps on the MS question site) that this is part of their newest system to block intrusions.
Never the less, I shall prevail.. or change from MS to something else...
    I'll keep ya posted.

    I'm going to :cry

I spent many hours reviewing hundreds of articles on the internet about this problem I'm having with IE8.

I found 'no' clear answer and tried dozens of differente approaches.

I finally ended up, I believe solving it by one of three, or all combined:

    I uninstalled and reinstalled IE8

I right clicked start, clicked explore and began a file by file investigation of every file and looked each up on the internet to determine if there was or had been a problem. I found a file in C://docs n settings/ all users/ application data/webreg/webregdata.xml. When I looked this up 90% of the posts said this was liable to be a bug, so I ran a trojan clean. It recommended quarintine and after a little soul searching and more reading I had it delete the file.

I also saw Avast had reported an attempted incursion (what I refer to as a bang) by what avast named to be a malicious url named css.wlxrs.com/ blah, blah a bunch of jumble letter and numbers, so I blocked it in the firewall.

All seemed to come together and the pooter was working nicely until I did what apparently was a stupid thing. I updated microsoft. As always, I typed www.microsoft.com in and went directly to their site, opened security, and clicked on updates and downloaded 19 updates, 15 of which were security updates.

When it was done and the computer restarted, it was worse than before and now I can't even get it on the internet.

I'm going to :cry... boo hoo...

Yeah, why not install another web browser? Firefox, Opera, and Chrome are all good choices. I'll suggest Firefox as the first one to try because I believe it's an easier transition from IE. But, you can have more than two browsers installed and try different ones. Keep in mind one browser needs to set as the default browser.

If I had recovery cds or software cds I'd strip this thing and reinstall...

I've ordered restore disks from manufactures before. Nominal cost usually $20-30 bucks. You call them up, give them the serial #. That said.

With installing, reverting the diffrent IE versions. I would try system file checker. My computer, propertys on C, tools. Sfc. Put the checks in both boxes. Re-start and let it try to fix any probs.

    Thanks to both of you...
First, I have emailed HP for the discs and I ran the tool which recovered the internet.
    I'll keep ya'll posted...
    Thanks again...

I'm thinking something to do with the security settings. The below is not recommended, but something to try.
    OR

Another thing to try is creating a new account on that computer and seeing if it exists there too. If it doesn't we need to look at your profile.

Good to hear your back on-line after running SFC. Ran it thru tools. I had an afterthought @ work. I should of told you not to run sfc/ scannow from the run command. As you don't have a disk. If it found files needed to be repaired-replaced.

It would of asked you for the XP Windows disk. It would of wanted the i386 file from the XP disk. Doing it thru tools, you didn't need the XP disk. It found the files from C: already on your computer.

usafvetran has a great point on using diffrent browsers. One yuks up, you can use another browser to "fix" the yuked up one.

Good grief Charlie Brown... lol... this situation just keeps getting worse.
After getting the damn thing back operational yesterday, thanks to your suggestions, I thought a good thing to do would be to run sfc /scannow thru 'run', and I did and of course it needed to do it at restart.
Now I am locked out because the screen says that some system folder is missing and wants me to put the recovery cd in and reboot. Of course I don't have it.. lol
I would tell you exactly what the screen said, but I am currently attempting a reboot using my Linux 10 Mint boot cd in hopes I can figure out how to do some repairs???
BTW... HP no longer has the recovery cds and gave me a link where I can purchase them for a little over $30 bucks.
I'll likely order the cds, but I've accepted this problem as a challenge and a learning experience and figure at this point I can do little harm and I'm just experimenting.
Any ideas, throw em out and I'll try them.

HP Compaq V2000 with XP Home Edition

Tried F8 boot to last config and didn't help.

The only real info I have is that with XP:

some system file was missing and XP could not boot

with Linux: applets installation somehow failed...

FYI... I am flying back home today for a family funeral and will return over the weekend and be back in contact.

    Thanks

    Hi bdelapp.

I know this is going back a ways as you have gone beyond this, but a couple of things here
    struck me about your comments.

The address for Microsoft Update is:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

I also have XP and I have created a direct link on my Desktop.
right click the desktop and choose new shortcut, then enter the following for the address:

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Use Microsoft Update as the name for the shortcut.

Also, you mentioned that you downloaded (and installed) 19 updates, of which 15 were security updates.

If you select the Express button then you'll get Only the High Priority security updates.

Since you installed 4 other "updates", those May be available to Uninstall.
Since you only NEED the security updates, you might take a look at those other updates
and see if they can be removed, which might take you back to where you said it was working well.

Bdelapp, Sorry to hear of your loss.

Mjnc, Good thought and great info. I was wondering if he navigated from the page within, to get the up-dates. Then might of gotten a bad download when he did it. ( It's happened to me before.) My thinking is if he can get into safe mode on F8. He might be able to run the system restore thru the pre-loaded command in windows.

As he has the restore disks now. His choice on when it asks for the disk. Windows will find the files he needs. Or worse case. Complete fresh install. Thanks for jumping in.
