So in May, I get a call from my ISP, Time Warner saying we need to get a new modem by the end of June because ours wont be supported by the manufacturer anymore. So by June 20th we buy and install a Motorola SB6141 modem.

The problems we're having didn't start until about a week ago. There will be a period of several hours where the internet will be SO SLOW. Web pages take up to a minute to load. I downloaded something today and the peak rate was 150 kb/s when usually it would be 1-1.2 MB/s. We never had this problem with our old modem and when we did, we would reset it by unplugging it and the router and it would be fixed and rarely happened again. I tried doing the same thing with our current equipment and it works for a little while, but will go back to being slow again.

I talked to my neighbors and they said they haven't experienced any problems so I'm not sure it's anything outside of the house. It could be the router? I'm using a netgear wireless router, but my computer is wired to it and the problem is with all internet devices in my house. Model number on my router is WNR2000. Any troubleshooting tips? Thanks guys!

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

If there was any software or device drivers installed for your old modem/router did/have you uninstalled them? if not then uninstall any or all drivers associated with all modem/router not only old but new one, then reboot and reinstall the new modem and software.

Do you know what version WNR2000 you have asn there are 3 versions V1, V2 and suprise V3?

Is your ISP service Cable or DSL?

What I'm thinking is a firmware update, but need version of router/modem to give you the correct one. Support pages for Netgear WNR2000

I would also as your ISP forced you into doing this change is to see what their Support think, they maybe able to do line tests and can at times update the Router from their end.

I'm not sure about device drivers. How would I check for the old ones?

I couldn't find anything on the router itself so i'm sure it's v1. The firmware version is V1.2.3.7NA

    My ISP is cable

I actually just updated the firmware while I was typing my original post. But it didn't fix the issue right away. Internet is working okay now, but could slow down again sometime tonight.

    Hi

On device drivers being old then Add/Remove or Device Manager will list these, although they will not tell you they are old, you just need to work out what is the old hardware or software from the new.

Nothing on the back of the Router, Netgear are normally good at labeling their devices as I use them alot myself.

Yeah you seem to have lates Firmware as I checked again from the info you gave.

If your internet slows down again let us know as if its ok now and normal speed great, but do let us know if its specific times of day its slow and what applications you are using to what sites you are on, may hold a clue.

If you have the old modem still can you plug that back in and use that? Seems strange for an ISP to demand you buy a new modem because manufacturer support is coming to an end, after all if its not supported but not causing problems who cares if its not supported.

Our ISP upgraded all their old Comtrend modems to Siemens but never asked us to upgrade the old ones just started shipping the Siemens ones to new clients and replacing the old ones with the new models when they died. The old ones work ten times better than the new ones do and I pick up the old ones whenever I get chance for just that reason.

Ive come across similar issues with fiber conections and duplexing but not regular dsl.
