Well for the last few days I've been experiencing issues with my internet connection. I have cable and it still seems to go slow. It started off with my modem dying. Recycling it resulted it in coming back online. The same thing happened the next day. Both happened late at night around 1 am.

Then the speed began to drop a lot and pages weren't opening correctly. I decided I've had enough called my ISP and was told that they'd send a technician. Today the guy game and said the modem was like dying so he replaced it but it still felt extremely slow...but far better than before...

Anyway to my question...Is there any good suggestions to increase my speed?

I've done antivirus scans and spyware scans...so I doubt that's the problem...

If anybody has any good suggestions, thanks in advance...

    Regards,
    -BB.

    Balban,
You know there are various sites that offer suggestions about optimizing your XP settings for cable. One of them is right
    here

But if your speeds were fine before, this doesn't sound like a bad settings problem. Anything you've done recently in the way of major new apps or utils or configs?

Hmm I've been to that site before, I do not like their registry techniques and I haven't really messed with any programs lately =\...

    Thanks again.

Are you on a home network or have a router? Firewall? Or maybe your connection settings are too low? (i.e. MTU)

*Rants at hotmail because it is making every website in its frames*

I did some etst which checked my MTU settings and it said they were fine. And yes I do have a firewall to stay protected but I do not have any router and I am not networked to any other computer.

have you tried running a speed test to see if your internet really does slow down a lot at certain times?

    www.dslreports.com/tools

just curious as to what you are getting... and if you notice it slowing again, run a speed test and see if the numbers have dropped significantly

you COULD just live in a bad cable network and the lines dont support much, OR your ISP may be getting lazy and not have enough of the cable nodes on their end to support the # of users they have... in which case its time to yell or change service :( but lets hope not.

hopefully we can solve this problem in your own home:)

Yes, I did do the analyzer test at www.speedguide.net.... and it seems the servers for the speed tests are currently busy.

Ok what did the Default Receive Window (RWIN) show ,if can't remember run another test.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
    Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    64240 (MSS x 44)

what are your speeds at for downloading with Rcv window at 256960.

I use zonealarm and NOD32 as a firewall and antivirus respectively. And this is what the speed tests say:

    your
    download «991 kbps

    your
    upload «182 kbps

Hmm my upload is really quite low and I used to hit up to 1336 kbps in download.
