    Hi

My DSL connection keeps disconnecting every now and then. Is there a freeware program that I can use to have my PC log back online (when im not around)?

    Thanks in advance

This isn't exactly what you are after, but you are likely much better off determining the root cause of the problem, and eliminating the disconnects completely. (instead of accomodating them!)

To this end, may I ask what operating system you're using? What type of internet connection? How does it connect to your computer? Through a router? If so, is it wired or wireless?

If this advice doesn't suit you, please disregard my post. (Or have it removed by clicking the report post http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/buttons/report.gif button)

    Absolutely

I'm usiing Win2000. Connection ADSL via modem. One technician told me that the disconnect is due to IP address change. I'm not sure if that is correct.

Thanks for offering to diagnose. Hopefully i can learn something new
    . Thanks again

One way to check is this:

    1. Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
    2. Type 'cmd' (without the quotes)
    3. Press enter (or click 'OK')
    4. Type 'ipconfig /all' (without the quotes)
    5. Press enter

This will show you the configuration of the network adapter you are using to connect to the internet. At the bottom, you will see the exact date and time that the IP lease will expire. If this coincides with a disconnect, then what the technician told you was accurate. Attached is a screenshot showing my own configuration. Circled is the information you will need to look for.

    Hi

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I followed your instructions and got the readout. The problem is that the readout STOPS at DNS servers and then the next prompt says C:\documents and settings \ user. It does not give any info on the lease period.

How can I take a screenshot as you have done? Maybe that'll illustrate it better if i can show you the readout

To capture the entire screen to the clipboard, press the Print Screen (Prnt Scrn) button. To take a screenshot of JUST the active window, press alt + prnt scrn.

In either case, you will have to paste the clipboards contents into a graphics program like MS Paint.

Clearly I'm a newbie at this - after getting the image onto the clipboard - how do i transfer it to paint. Save as function won't save it as a GIF file nor will paint open a CLP file. What step am I missing?

Pasting it. With MS paint window active (ie title bar is blue and not grey) press either ctrl + v, or click edit--> paste, with the screenshot on the clipboard.

Hmmm...this says that your network adapter does not have DHCP enabled, and you do not have a private IP address, so this must be the what you are connecting directly to the modem with, right? No router between this computer and the modem?

If so, I'd have to say that your technician wasn't right! This configuration says to me that your IP address should never change (unless done manually). DHCP is the service that willl assign you an IP address from the available IP pool, but it is not enabled on this adapter, so it should ALWAYS be the IP you have specified here.

Thanks for your advice mada. I'll have a tech check it out. In the meantime do you know of any reconnect program that I can use until the problem has been fixed?
