Internet not working

Hi guys, I'm hoping you can fix this problem. Last night my computer was having some weird issues when I was playing a game. It acted like the mouse scroll wheel was stuck even when my mouse was unplugged. I restarted and it fixed that problem but by night time my internet stopped working.

After trying everything I could possibly think of like flushing the dns and releasing and renewing the Ip, it doesn't seem to be able to find an IP address. My Ipod can still connect to the network and so can the laptop I am on currently (obviously).

I ran a Malwarebytes full scan and it found no threats. However, my Comodo Internet Security picked up two threats while it was scanning. It was quarantined as Heur.Packed.Unknown. There were two temp files so I figured it wouldn't hurt to quarantine those. I then ran the Comodo virus scan and it found nothing. I then ran Roguekiller - didn't delete anything just scanned. It picked up strange registry keys. I ran it again this morning and the number of registry keys have doubled.

I should probably also note that while snooping around on Google there were drivers that were commonly missing. I checked my drivers and ipsec.sys is not there. I'm not really sure if that's important. I attached all the logs needed but I don't think Mgtools ran correctly.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Correct about MGtools and we really need this log. Are you sure that you shutdown all protection software before trying to run it? Also did you disable UAC?

Rerun RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist and then click the Delete button. NOTE: Only fix the ProxyServer line if this is not something you knowingly added.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

I deleted the stuff on Roguekiller including the proxy which I did not put there. I cannot get Mgtools to run at all. It keeps telling me access denied even though my Comodo is disabled and my UAC is all the way off. I have noticed however that there are 2 Comodo processes stuck in my task manager and I am unable to end them. When running Mgtools.exe it tells me that I do not have permission to do so.

    Things to note:
    - After running Roguekiller and rebooting, my computer started up slower than a snail race
    - Certain programs are acting like there is another account on the computer when there isn't e.g. Openoffice is open on another account are you sure you want to open this file?
    - Internet is still not working Limited access
    - Not too important but, after running Roguekiller my User folder and Computer icons have shown up on the desktop which have never been there before

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop. Do not run it yet!!!

Now reboot your PC into safe boot mode before continuing with the below.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Please reboot into normal mode and see if you can run the below.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

No luck so far. The windows repair seemed to go well. I noticed it failed to reset some registries and files. No mgtools though. If I run getlogs.bat from the mgtools folder it says access denied. If I run mgtools.exe then it says I do not have the appropriate permissions to do so and that it cannot access the specified path.

Are you still in safe boot mode? Are you logged in with a user account that has administrator permissions?

I tried to get the logs from normal boot mode. There is only one account on this laptop and yes it has administrator privileges. I can give you a hijackthis log if you think it could help

    Try safe boot mode.

    Of little to zero use.

I'm not seeing any malware in your logs. I suggest that you uninstall all of the below

    Comodo Dragon
    COMODO Internet Security
    GeekBuddy

Then reboot your PC and check whether your internet connection now works.

Huzzah! It was Comodo that was screwing up the internet! As proof I am posting from my laptop. And just for the heck of it I am posting my MGtools log because it appears that Comodo was blocking that too.

I'm guessing that Comodo is just too good at what it does sometimes. But is it ok to reinstall it? I don't really want to surf the net without an antivirus.

I have Comodo's full security suite installed on the PC where I'm typing from now and I don't have any such problems. You have to be careful that you do not block things that you need to allow to run. Like your browsers and many other things. I'm guessing that is what you somehow did.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
