Internet only in safe mode

Hi, i have partitioned my os x with windows xp sp2. My internet was working fine on this partition until today. Just prior to it stopping i removed an out of date version of Norton 360 to replace it with avira. Following this and the subsequent restart my internet has stopped with the error message saying explorer was unable to locate http https and ftp protocols. I have also tried with chrome but it did not help. Following this i booted in safe mode and the internet does indeed work. I have checked my internet connection settings and nothing is being routed through a proxy or anything. I have also tried disabling my antivirus and firewall temporarily. I also suspected it might be malware but after posting on the malware forum i have learnt my system is clean. Thank you in advance for your help,
