Looking at Add/Remove Programs I have found InternetPaladin which I cannot remove. I believe this is a trojan. I have also had my home page hijacked by MSN. How do I get rid of them? I attach my HJT log. This says that my home page is my own web site www.peterwalker.info which indeed it shows in IE>Tools>Internet Options but it still opens with MSN. I think I got it today when I downloaded Anti Trojan Elite from Major Geeks.

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif In your next post, please make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order:
    • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Thanks for all you instructions which I think I have followed with the exception of Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. I downloaded this file: Windows-KB890830-V1.21.exe and double clicked it but apart from something flashing very briefly on the screen, nothing else happened. I cannot find it on the system to check if it produced a report. I attach: bdscan, runkeys, newfiles. There was no report for Panda presumably because it didn't find anything. I will upload HJT as a separate message. The problems of Internet Paladin which I canot remove from Add/Remove Programs and MSN hikacking my home page still remain.

I have just uninstalled IE7 and therefore now have IE6 which shows my web site as the home page so MSN seems to have disappeared!! One problem solved.

Fresh HJT log attached. The only thing changed since the last log is the change back from IE7 to IE6.

Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall them if found:

    AutoUpdate

Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

Now, Please boot into Safe Mode, be sure you have the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled per the tutorial. Now, navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate Delete this whole folder if it exist!

Next, run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

After you complete this post, reboot once more and let me know how things are running and if any problems remain.

Thanks for the instructions which I have carried out. As explained in the previous post I reverted to IE6 and the MSN hijack problem disappeared. However, Internet Paladin still remains in Add/Remove Programs. Clicking “Change\Remove” takes me to IE notetol.com/uninstall.php. The only thing on the page is an “uninstall” button which if clicked then changes the page to notetol.com/uninstall.php?accept= and a message "Thanks" but the program is not removed.

A search of the Registry for “Paladin” produces one entry at: HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/{C41A3693-D809-1FC5-61A6-370F1C241EE6}. The right hand pane shows:
    Default Value not set
    Display name Internet Paladin
    Uninstall string “C:\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” notetol.com/uninstall.php
Should I delete the whole of this entry? Will it solve the problem?
I attach my latest HJT log (after the cleanup)

Download Your Uninstaller! 2006 5.0.0.256, save to desktop and install.

Locate VsAdd-in and uninstall this way. Probably would be better to do this In Safe Mode. Once you do this uninstall, run a Panda scan and then attach a fresh HJT log with the Panda log.

Have just checked Geeks as I haven't had an email saying you had posted a reply. I have downloaded Your Uninstaller but cannot find VsAdd-in. I doesn't appear in the files folder or in the program when launched.

Instead of waiting for your reply, I ran Your Uninstaller and managed to uninstall InternetPaladin. I have run Panda and it did not find any problems. I attach my HJT log. All would appear to be in order now. Many thanks for your help.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    7. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

As I was still having various problems I decided to reformat my hard disk today, which has solved everything. Thanks for all your help.
