Internet problem...

My friend can't connect to a website that she previously could. She doesn't recollect making and changes to her system... just reading something, refreshing the page and it was gone. She has run 2 seperate trace programs: one shows the route dropping at the ISP of the site she is trying to access (first 2 numbers of the IP are the same) after 18 hops, the second trace (diff program) says it is something with her computer and loses it after 10 hops.

    She did get this message:

problems occured while transporting data across this route. connections to http and port 8080 are being refused

She tried a system restore to the previous day, in case she had changed something, but no luck.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas how to help?

Can she still connect to most other sites?

I would imagine this site or server maybe off line at present... try later is this a major website or one using an ISPs webspace?

This is a friends little message board/home site... so, yes using ISP's space. i have no problem connecting, nor do any of the other people that go there. Just this one person. She has had no problems with any other site. Rather baffling...

Possibly the DNS server not seeing the base URL?

How does she connect to the internet? Dial-up? Cable? I'd have to say it's either something with her computer, which is quite vague, or her ISP. Perhaps the default gateway she goes out through from her ISP has a problem with their routing table all of a sudden... or some other networking problem. Could be a number of things.

The possibility of the problem lying with her computer could also be a number of things. I wouldn't know where to begin in that area. Since you've already tried a system restore, I'd almost be tempted to say the problem does not lie with her computer. But you never know. My advice is to give the ISP a call... see if they're having any problems.

Try deleting the cookie for that site, close IE and open again then try the URL again.

She says she deleted her cookies then closed then tried and it still didnt work. Also, on the DNS issue, she has tried with the actual numeric IP addy. No luck there either. Her connection is DSL. i will tell her to call her ISP.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks, keep em comin :)

Try using a proxy on another coast, since it's going through a different route and not through the same routers (unless it is to get to the proxy) it may be able to hit the page, you say DSL, are you sure it's not the transparent proxy not blocking it? (I believe DSL uses transparent proxies)

Kinda strange that that's the only site she can't get to... what's the URL or domain name? We can all see if access is blocked for us as well. I know you said your friends can reach it, but the more people you can get to try it, the more information or feedback we can give you.

Tell her to check her hosts file.
    In win2k
    C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\
    in winxp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

the hosts file has no extension but she can open it with any text editor.
Make sure the url / ip of the site does NOT exist in that file. If it does, then delete it and save the file.

    how would i do this?

and i just checked the host file, which i forgot to do before, but the IP / url wasn't in that file.

thanks for the suggestions though, this is quite confusing :(

Find a (LEGAL) proxy, put in the IE settings

    Or even try megaproxy.com

Some of your friends might be able to connect, but that's because they've got a different ISP (or do they?) which uses a different gateway, which uses a different route to get to that site. If the site can be reached from your friend's ISP, but not yours, that may mean there's a problem with either her ISP or the site's ISP and the route they take to connect to one another... comprendé?

Anyway... we could try the URL from our gateways (ISPs) to see if it's the site's ISP that's causing the problem, but if we can connect to the site, then perhaps it just might be a problem with your ISP. And... as a last consideration... I could be totally wrong! :D

Thanks for all the help, everyone :) She managed to connect thru Megaproxy.com (though not able to login). So that means and ISP issue?

Yes, a router between her and the site must be down, phone her ISP, that or her ISP/work is blocking the site..
